Comeback attempt falls just short at Colgate

Hamilton, NY – Lehigh scored five unanswered goals in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Colgate hung on for a 7-5 victory over the Mountain Hawks at Tyler’s Field on Tuesday night.  The win improves the Raiders’ record to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 3-10 on the season, and 1-5 against league opposition.

Colgate ran out to a 7-0 lead in the first half, and Lehigh was never able to fully recover.  Brendan Hurley scored twice in helping the Raiders to a healthy halftime advantage.  Lehigh goalkeeper Tom Ellis recorded seven saves over the first 30 minutes.

In the second half, head coach Chris Wakely went to freshman Dusty Granet between the pipes, and he didn’t disappoint.  Granet turned away all ten shots he faced in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Lehigh offense began to click as the Mountain Hawks made their push.  Freshman Steve Marino found the back of the net twice, while David Gaunt, Blake Best, and Greg Morin all added scores as the Mountain Hawks drew within two.  Morin also added an assist in the comeback push.

In the end, though, time ran out and the comeback attempt just came up short for Lehigh.  The Mountain Hawks were out-shot 33-30 for the game, and Colgate came away with 35 ground balls, compared to 29 for the Brown & White.

Lehigh wraps up its season on Saturday night, as the Mountain Hawks visit rival Lafayette.  Game time is set for 7:00 from Metzgar Fields in Easton.
