Villanova blanks Lehigh at Goodman Field

Chris Postlewait pitched well over the first two innings for Lehigh, before head coach Sean Leary went to the bullpen for the first time. He brought in Chris O’Brien (0-1) for his first appearance of the season. O’Brien pitched well in his first three innings, limiting the Wildcats to only one hit.
In the sixth, however, O’Brien ran into trouble. After a bunt single and a hit batsman, Villanova left fielder Brian Newbold grounded a single up the middle to plate a run. Before the inning ended, two more Wildcats were hit by a pitch, and three others recorded hits as Villanova scored three times.
The three-run outburst proved to be more than enough for the Wildcats pitching staff, as they kept Lehigh off the scoreboard. The Mountain Hawks could not figure out Villanova starter Ted Aust (3-0) through the first five innings, and were also unable to score off three Wildcats relief pitchers.
Second baseman Jesse Novalis, DH Matt McBride, and shortstop Steve Salemme all picked up two hits for the Mountain Hawks in a losing effort, and catcher Matt Capell (along with McBride) smacked a double.
Joel Hockman (1.1 innings), Matt Mezzancello (one inning), and John Zaszewski (one inning) all pitched scoreless relief for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, when Lehigh resumes Patriot League play at Navy. The four game set will be broadcast live on Lehigh’s web site (lehighsports.com), with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports. Micah B. Hart will provide the play-by-play commentary for the series.
