Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh fought hard all afternoon and took the lead into halftime, but in the end the Mountain Hawks simply ran out of time, and fell to No. 9 Army by a score of 14-11 on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Alec Hoof scored four goals for Lehigh to lead the way, while Stephen Marino dished out a team high three assists.  With the loss, Lehigh falls to 3-8 on the season, 1-3 in Patriot League play, while the Black Knights improve to 8-2, 3-1 in league action.

Army got on the board first as Jeff Bryan found the back of the net at the 13:30 mark of the first half to put the Black Knights in front 1-0.  John Walker then followed that up with a goal of his own at the 12:01 mark and Army was in front 2-0.  But Lehigh came back with a flourish, scoring three consecutive goals, one each from Andrew Mastromonaco, Marino and Hoof to put the Mountain Hawks in front at 3-2 early in the second quarter.

Walker then scored a goal for Army to tie the affair at three, but the Mountain Hawks answered back as Andrew Lucas took a pass from Marino and found the back of the net at the 10:51 clip of the second and the Brown and White was back in front 4-3.  Hoof and Marino then scored back to back goals to propel Lehigh to a three goal lead at 6-3 at the 5:57 mark of the second period.  The Black Knights scored a goal of their own to close within two, but the Mountain Hawks scored one more time before the half to take a 7-4 lead on Lucas’s second goal.

The second half started with some offensive fireworks, unfortunately for Lehigh they came from Army.  The Black Knights ripped off six straight scores to begin the second half and surge in front 10-7.  Four of the goals came within 1:30 of one another, and the momentum had shifted to the Black Knights side.  But Lehigh would not quit and continually pressured the Knights and answered the physical nature and style of the school from West Point.  Greg Morin then got Lehigh back on the offensive side of things as he scored a goal at the 6:14 mark of the third and the Mountain Hawks were back to within two at 10-8.

Army scored four unanswered goals however and with 7:35 remaining were in front 14-8.  Lehigh responded once again however, as Hoof scored twice and Blake Best also found the back of the net to make the Black Knights sweat this one out a little.  In the end though Lehigh simply ran out of time to mount another comeback and fell to the Black Knights 14-11.

Despite the loss, there were many bright spots for the Mountain Hawks including Jeff King’s eight groundballs, and Tom Ellis’s 14 saves on the day.  Head Coach Chris Wakely was pleased with the effort of his team and of the way the Mountain Hawks continued to fight until the very end.  “We played hard all of the way through to the end.  We didn’t just play out those last seven minutes, we played them like we played the first seven minutes of the game.”  Wakely continues, “We matched up well with them on offense, it’s just that they (Army) are so good at groundballs and faceoffs and they won so many of them today, it’s hard to beat them when they do that so well.”

Wakely concludes, “Our defense played well through the run they had, Tom Ellis continued to help us by making some big saves.  We got better today more so than in any other game we’ve had thus far this season.  I’m proud of the guys and happy with our overall effort.”

Lehigh now has several days off before taking to the road to take on yet again, another nationally ranked Patriot League foe.  On Friday Lehigh will travel to Annapolis to take on No. 4 Navy.  That game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 and all of the action can be heard live on Lehigh’s website at lehighsports.com.
