Mountain Hawks drop another close one

3/6/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse

Philadelphia, PA – Lehigh got ahead versus St. Joseph’s but could not hold on to the lead, eventually falling 8-5 on Saturday afternoon at Finnesey Field.  With the loss, the Mountain Hawks fall to 0-3, while St. Joe’s improves to 1-3.

Jeff King got the day started for Lehigh with a goal at the 10:04 mark of the first period, unassisted.  St. Joe’s responded with two goals however, just over one minute apart to take a 2-1 lead, and it appeared as though that would remain the score heading into the second period.  However, with just three seconds remaining in the first, Stephen Marino found the back of the net off of a feed from Greg Morin, who leads the team with six points on the season, and the contest was knotted up at two after one period.

St. Joe’s then scored the next three goals of the game to surge ahead 5-2, but Lehigh did not back down, responding with two goals of its own, Marino’s second of the day and Connor McCarthy finding the back of the net for the first time this season.  Just as it appeared the Mountain Hawks were ready to make a move for the lead, St. Joe’s came back with two goals of its own, and with 14 minutes remaining in the game, the Mountain Hawks trailed 7-4.

Mike Osborne would add a late goal for Lehigh, but it was not enough as the Mountain Hawks fell to their third straight opponent by three goals of less.  Blake Best, Marino and Morin all registered assists for Lehigh on the afternoon.  The Mountain Hawks were outshot 29-23 for the game, but did pick up 31 groundballs, to the Hawks 22, led by Jim Gabel’s six.  In goal for Lehigh, Tom Ellis stopped 13 shots on the day.

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia again, this time for a meeting with Ivy League member Penn.  That game is scheduled to begin at 3:00.
