Lehigh fights tough, but falls to No. 19 Penn

Philadelphia, PA – Lehigh gave up five first quarter goals, and that proved to be the difference in a 9-5 Mountain Hawk loss to Penn on Wednesday afternoon in front of 650 in attendance. Lehigh hung tough with the Quakers following the tough early going, scoring four goals in the final three periods to match Penn’s four goals in the final three periods, but it was the first quarter that sent Lehigh to its fourth consecutive loss. With the setback, Lehigh falls to 0-4 on the season, while Penn improves to 2-1.
Penn jumped all over Lehigh scoring four goals in six minutes, the first coming just 3:47 into the contest. The Quakers then backed that up with another score, this time from D.J. Andrzejewski, three minutes later. Lehigh was finally able to get on the board at the 14:30 mark of the first half when Andrew Lucas found the back of the net for his third goal of the season off of a Stephen Marino feed to pull the Mountain Hawks to within 4-1. However, Penn struck back quickly, scoring with just five seconds to go in the period as Greg Voigt scored his first goal of the season to send the Quakers to a 5-1 lead at the end of one.
From there, it was an even game, with Lehigh matching the Quakers every move. David Gaunt scored his second goal of the season at the 6:43 mark of the second period unassisted to pull Lehigh within three at 5-2, and Penn responded with a goal by Alex Salihi to go back up by four at 6-2. The teams traded goals from there on out, with Mike Osborne and Connor McCarthy both finding the back of the net, McCarthy finding it twice.
Marino had the lone assist for Lehigh on the afternoon, while McCarthy led the Mountain Hawks with three shots on the afternoon. In goal for Lehigh, Tom Ellis saw shots for the game, and he sent back 11 of them. Jeff King scooped up a team-high five ground balls and Tom Weiss won five face-offs for the Mountain Hawks. The Quakers were led on offense by Will Phillips with five points, as he found the back of the net twice and handed out three assists.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks play host to Patriot League foe Hobart at Ulrich Field. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00.
