Clabby's overtime goal gives Lehigh dramatic win

10/13/2004 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

Bethlehem, PA – Senior Sheila Clabby took a pass from junior Maureen Harrington at the 89:54 mark of the second overtime and deposited the ball in the back of the net to lift Lehigh to a dramatic 2-1 double overtime win over Drexel on Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  With the win, the Mountain Hawks equal their total of seven from a year ago and pull even at 7-7 in 2004.  The visiting Dragons fall to 5-9 on the year.

Drexel got on the board first when Rachael Bloemker took a nice setup from Amanda Mouser and rocketed the ball past Lehigh goal keeper Jeanine Hoff to put the Dragons in front 1-0 just three minutes into the contest.  Cassandra Prentiss sent the ball into play on a penalty corner to start the action, which ended on Bloemker’s goal.

The two teams then battled evenly for the remainder of the half, with Lehigh and Drexel both getting off seven shots, while the Mountain Hawks had four penalty corners to the Dragon’s three.  However, neither squad could find the back of the net in the remaining 32 minutes, and so the teams retired at halftime with the visitors in front by a 1-0 count.

Lehigh used a penalty corner of its own to pull even in the second half at the 40:36 mark as junior Mary Beth Kuenne blasted a ball past the Drexel goalie to knot the contest at one.  Senior Krista Jamieson took the penalty corner from junior Marissa Iannarone and set up Kuenne for the score.  The two teams then battled for the remaining part of the second half, but to no avail as time ran out and the game headed for overtime.

Lehigh unleashed 21 shots on the night, while Drexel got off 15.  The Mountain Hawks had nine corners, while the Dragons had 11.  Junior Meghan Gove relieved Hoff in goal for Lehigh and sent back four Dragon shots, while Hoff stopped six in her time on the field.  Drexel goalie Katie Dougherty stopped 14 Mountain Hawk shots on the night.

Head Coach Julie Mazer was excited to see the Mountain Hawks fight back and pick up the big win.  “This was a total team effort.  We talked about taking advantage of the first opportunity we were given in the second overtime and it paid off.  We made a lot of good decisions out there tonight, we were communicating very well and in the end it paid off.”  Mazer concluded, “We showed a lot of heart on the field this evening and we just have to be ready now for our game on Saturday.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Hamilton, New York for a key Patriot League contest versus Colgate.  Game time is set for 1:00.
