Bethlehem, PA – On Sunday afternoon, in front of a sellout crowd of 2, 680 at Grace Hall, Greg Strobel’s 13th ranked grapplers made history. For the first time since 1982, Lehigh earned its second straight win over 17th ranked Penn State. The Brown and White overpowered the Nittany Lions, easily defeating them 32-6. Lehigh improved its dual record to 4-3 on the season while Penn State fell to 1-4.
"I was so nervous coming into this match, I woke up sick," said Head coach Greg Strobel. His team assured him he had nothing to worry about as they went on to win nine of ten bouts.
Rob Rohn got things started off right for the Brown and White. In an exciting bout at 184, Rohn upset ninth ranked Mark Becks in a 6-5 decision. Rohn entered the match ranked 11th.
Riding on the momentum of his teammate, Jon Trenge kept the crowd on its feet, at 197. Ranked second in then nation, Trenge continued his winning ways, effortlessly pinning Penn State’s Pete Mielnik in 2:30.
In the heavyweight bout Shawn Laughlin recorded two takedowns en route to a 5-4 decision over the Nittany Lion’s Pat Cummins. "Laughlin did a great job, that was a big win for him," said head coach Greg Strobel.
At 125 Mario Stuart refused to allow Penn State on the board. Stuart recorded two quick takedowns and never looked back. He tabbed a solid 8-3 decision over Justin Kast.
Eleventh ranked Josh Moore put the first and only points on the board for the Nittany Lions. Moore recorded the second pin of the match, taking down Lehigh’s Dan Hyman in 2:15.
Tristan Boyd officially wrestled his first match of the New Year after winning by forfeit in Michigan. At 141, Boyd earned a 6-4 decision over Scott Moore, who entered ranked 17th nationally.
Lehigh’s Mike Pirozzola rebounded from his loss at Michigan, recording a 10-4 decision over Jason Woodall. Warren Stout, who was also looking for redemption from the Michigan match, earned a 6-4 decision over James Woodall.
At 165 Chris Vitale tabbed the first major decision of the match, defeating Penn State’s Doc Vecchio. Vitale allowed Vecchio to escape four times, in an effort to record a number of takedowns and earn the Mountain Hawks more team points.
Brad Dillon following Vitale’s example, recorded a 14-5 major decision over Penn State's Todd Brennan to seal the deal for the Mountain Hawks.
Strobel was impressed by the team's effort. "We wrestled well at Michigan, but we didn't fight. Tonight we wrestled well and fought hard," said Strobel.
Lehigh looks to win its second straight on Wednesday January 9th as they travel to the New York Athletic Club to face Hofstra. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7:00.
