Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (1-1-0) impressed throughout as the Mountain Hawks won their first game of the season, a 3-0 victory over St. Francis of PA (0-1-0) at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
After 15 minutes of close play to start the game, Lehigh took over, taking the lead on a goal by senior co-captain Anne Johnson at 24:25 of the first half. Lehigh took a 1-0 lead into halftime, and then came out firing in the second half.
Controlling possession the entire way, Lehigh notched two goals within a few minutes of each other to take firm command of the game. Junior Jocelyn Helwig scored off a beautiful cross from Adrienne Grunwald at 67:52, and then minutes later at 70:56 freshman midfielder Gina Lewandowski blasted one from 25 yards out to complete the scoring.
Coach Manny Oudin was happy with his team’s play. "We started out slow in the first half," said Oudin, "but once we found our legs we were able to create some scoring opportunities. In the second half, we kept applying pressure and finally were able to put some balls away."
The Mountain Hawks outshot the Red Flash 23-4 on the day, barely having use for All-Patriot League goalie Erin Iwaskiewicz. Lehigh will return to action on Wednesday, September 3, as they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls.
