BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Lehigh softball kicked off spring break by sweeping a doubleheader from Binghamton Saturday at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park. The Mountain Hawks took game one 7-5 and then won game two 11-3 in six innings to run their winning streak to five straight while improving to 10-6 on the season.
Junior Peyton Sward paced Lehigh with five hits and four RBIs, including the go-ahead two-run single in game one. Senior Sydney Parlett, and sophomores Lizzie Kern and Kelly Fricker all recorded four hits over Saturday's twin bill.
Lehigh started game one fast with three runs in the top of the first inning as Sward tripled home Fricker and Parlett singled home Sward. First-year Kyra Neiswender scored on a wild pitch to put Lehigh up 3-0 before Binghamton came to bat.
The Mountain Hawks added single runs in the second and fourth innings, including an RBI by first-year Megan Lodge, to go up 5-2 before the Bearcats scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game.
A two-run Sward single in the seventh put Lehigh up 7-5. Binghamton put the tying runs on base but junior Maddy Clark induced a 5-3 double play to end the game.
Clark earned the win in relief in the circle, allowing one run on four hits over 2.2 innings, including four key strikeouts. First-year Addison Moorman allowed three earned runs over 4.1 innings before giving way to classmate Maddie Masiko.
Sward was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Kern and junior Holly Lovett also recorded two hits.
Lehigh built an 8-0 lead midway through the fourth inning before tacking on three more runs in the sixth to end the game.
Sward and Parlett delivered RBI hits to put Lehigh in front after half an inning. After Kern brought home a run with a bunt single, first-year Lola Fasano delivered a two-run double, followed by a Fricker RBI single as the Mountain Hawks went up 6-0. RBI hits from Kern and junior Gracie Smith extended the lead to 8-0 before Binghamton plated a pair of runs to keep the game going.
In the sixth, Parlett and senior Crysta Duenas homered to give Lehigh an 11-2 lead. Duenas' two-run shot was the first of her career.
Sophomore Madison Finnerty went the distance in the circle allowing three runs on three hits over six innings. Finnerty walked four and struck out seven.
Fricker and Parlett both had three hits to lead Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their spring break trip with a doubleheader at Cornell Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
