Lehigh Drops Pair of One-Run Heartbreakers to Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing its home and Patriot League-opening doubleheader, the Lehigh softball team dropped a pair of one-run heartbreakers to Colgate Saturday at Leadership Park. A back-and-forth game one saw Colgate tie the game with two outs in the seventh, with the Raiders going on to win 10-9 in nine innings after hitting their seventh home run of the game. In game two, Lehigh gave up six runs in the top of the seventh to fall behind 9-1 but scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh only to strand the tying run at first base, falling 9-8.
Sophomore Lizzie Kern had a huge day at the plate for Lehigh, going 6-for-9 across the two games, with four runs scored and six RBIs. She was 4-for-5 in game one and homered to put the Mountain Hawks on the board in game two.
Lehigh is 15-13 overall, while Colgate moves to 13-15.
Kern opened the scoring in game one with a first-inning single that brought home junior Peyton Sward. Sophomore Kelly Fricker added an RBI single, scoring first-year Kyra Neiswender in the second inning, giving the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Colgate answered with five runs, on three home runs, to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the third inning. Mackenzie Lewis hit a three-run home run to give the Raiders the lead, before Nora Megenity and Marina Taveras followed with solo home runs.
Kern doubled home another run in the bottom of the third and later scored on a wild pitch to bring Lehigh within 5-4.
The second home runs of the game for Megenity and Taveras extended Colgate's lead to 8-4 in the fifth. A three-run, pinch-hit, double by first-year Megan Lodge brought Lehigh within 8-7 after five innings.
Kern's fourth hit of game one, a sixth inning single, brought home Sward with the tying run. Senior Abbey Tabaka followed with an RBI single, scoring Kern to give Lehigh a 9-8 lead going to the seventh.
With the Raiders down to their final strike, Kayla Martin homered to left field, tying the game at 9-9.
Junior Holly Lovett doubled leading off the home seventh and Lehigh got the winning run to third base with one out, but Kelcie McGraw got two big strikeouts to keep the game tied.
Lily Haluska hit Colgate's seventh home run of the game, the eventual game winner, with one out in the seventh and Lehigh was unable to match against McGraw in the bottom of the frame.
In addition to Kern's four hits, Fricker had three in game one, while Lovett and junior Gracie Smith both had two.
First-year Addision Moorman started in the circle and struck out eight over nine innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. Classmate Maddie Masiko also faced three batters.
Martin gave Colgate a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two with a two-run double in the first inning.
Kern continued her hot day with an opposite field home run in the second, her fourth of the season, to bring Lehigh within 2-1.
Colgate tacked on a run in the fifth and then plated six in the seventh, highlighted by an Izzy Ervin-Agudelo grand slam to center field, as the Raiders went up 9-1.
Lehigh did not go down quietly. Lovett singled home a run, sophomore Wrigley Fanter brought home a run with a sacrifice fly and then Sward drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-4 with two outs in the seventh. Senior Sydney Parlett cut the deficit to 9-6 with a two-run single and then Kern followed with a two-run single to make it 9-8. With Kern as the tying run on first base, Alexa Acker struck out Smith to thwart Lehigh's comeback attempt.
The Mountain Hawks had nine hits in game two, with Parlett, Kern, Lodge and Lovett each recording two.
Sophomore Madison Finnerty started in the circle allowing eight earned runs over 6.2 innings before junior Maddy Clark got the final out. Finnerty struck out six while Clark fanned one batter.
The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will close out their series with a single game Sunday at noon.
