
Stanich Makes U20 World Team, Ziegler Wins U23 National Title In Ohio

GENEVA, Ohio – Sophomore Luke Stanich won his best-of-three finals series to make the U.S. Junior World Team, while first-year Mason Ziegler won a national title to lead three Lehigh place winners at the U23 Nationals, with both events taking place at SPIRE Academy Saturday-Sunday.

Stanich won his finals series versus Bo Bassett 2-1 to earn the right to represent the U.S. at 65 kg at the Junior World Championships, Aug. 18-24 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

On Saturday, Stanich and Bassett split their first two matches by identical 3-2 scores, with Stanich winning the first and Bassett taking the second. The deciding match was all Stanich who had five takedowns, leading 4-0 at the break and then adding three morein the second period to end the match 1-0 at 5:14.

Ziegler went 7-0 over two days of competition at 57 kg. Sunday's action began with the quarterfinal round, where Ziegler won 4-2 over Binghamton's Carson Wagner and then defeated Army's Charlie Farmer 5-3. In the best-of-three finals, Ziegler matched up with Daniel Guanajuato of South Dakota State, and swept the series 2-0, winning matches 6-4 and 5-3.

Senior Max Brignola (74 kg) and sophomore Rylan Rogers (86 kg) also made the championship quarterfinals and joined Ziegler in earning top eight finishes. Rogers made the semifinals before falling 8-3 to eventual champion Rocco Welsh. Following his semifinal loss, Rogers defaulted to sixth place. Brignola dropped his quarterfinal to runner-up Daniel Cardenas but bounced back with an 11-2 decision over Braeden Scoles (Illinois) to secure his top eight finish. After a loss in the consolation quarterfinals, Brignola won by medical forfeit in his seventh place match.

Lehigh had 17 entrants at the U23 Nationals. Along with its three place winners, three others advanced to Sunday's second day of competition. First-year Jadon Skellenger (70 kg), sophomore Jared Schoppe (86 kg) and junior Jack Wilt (92 kg) advanced to day two but were eliminated prior to securing a podium place.
