BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A five-run second inning staked the Lehigh softball team to an early lead, but visiting Army West Point scored the game's final six runs to rally for a 6-5, eight-inning win Sunday at Leadership Park. A Lehigh error following Maaika Dones' eighth inning single allowed Emma Murchison to score the go-ahead run.
Â
Army committed four of its five errors in Lehigh's five-run second inning, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to push any more runs across on the day. Lehigh left 11 runners on base Sunday and left 33 runners on base across the three game series that was swept by the Black Knights.
Â
Lehigh falls to 12-17 overall while Army is now 16-12.
Â
The Mountain Hawks sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring five runs on just three hits. An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by first-year Lizzie Kern allowed junior pinch runner Crysta Duenas to score the game's first run. Sophomore Peyton Sward and first-year Kelly Fricker reached on errors on ground balls to second base with the bases loaded, allowing two more runs to score and junior Julia Mrochko singled through the left side to plate two more and put Lehigh up 5-0.
Â
Army pulled a run back in the third inning on Annie Christiana's RBI ground out and the Black Knights pulled even with four runs in the sixth on Caitlyn Newburn's RBI single and a three-run home run by Maisi Sigler.
Â
Lehigh put its first two batters on base in the fifth but was unable to add to its lead at the time. Senior Maddy Schmeiser drew a four-pitch leadoff walk in the seventh and was sacrificed into scoring position, but Army's Katelyn Flanders was able to work out of trouble and keep the game tied.
Â
Murchison doubled with one out in the eighth wand two batters later, Dones singled through the left side. Junior Abbey Tabaka was unable to field the base hit cleanly, allowing Murchison to score the go-ahead run.
Â
Lehigh put two on with two out in the bottom of the eighth as Fricker singled to right and Mrochko was hit by a pitch, but Flanders got Schmeiser to pop out to third to end the game.
Â
Fricker and Mrochko both had two hits as the Mountain Hawks finished with six.
Â
Junior Chloe Hess started in the circle allowing five runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Hess struck out four and did not walk a batter. First-year Madison Finnerty pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing the one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Â
Flanders threw 6.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory for the Black Knights.
