Mountain Hawks Head To Lafayette For Annual Rivalry Series

3/28/2025 10:55:00 AM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The first road weekend of Patriot League play sends the Lehigh softball team on a short trip to Easton to face Lafayette in the annual Rivalry series at Metzgar Fields Complex. The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon, followed by a Sunday single game also starting at noon, with coverage of all three games slated for ESPN+.

Lehigh comes in at 12-17 overall and in the unusual space of 0-3 in league play. The Mountain Hawks were swept at home by Army West Point in their league-opening series last weekend, including a pair of one-run, eight-inning defeats. First-year Kelly Fricker batted .538 (7-for-13) with two runs, two doubles and two RBIs in the series, but Lehigh left 33 runners on base over three games and hit just .152 with runners in scoring position.

Fricker is batting .392 this season with nine doubles and 15 RBIs. Senior Maddy Schmiser leads Lehigh in batting average at a .412 clip and also has 13 RBIs. Senior Rory Dudley has driven in a team-best 18 runs with she and classmate Julia Mrochko tied for the team lead in home runs with three.

Junior Chloe Hess has been Lehigh's top pitcher, striking out 50 over 74.1 innings while going 5-6 with a 3.86 ERA.

Lafayette lost its first 18 games in 2025 before responding with five consecutive victories. The Leopards followed a doubleheader sweep of St. Peter's on March 15 with a three-game sweep of Holy Cross in their league opener last weekend. Mary Grace O'Neill leads Lafayette with a .414 batting average and 11 runs scored, while Katie Harrington leads the Leopards with 11 RBIs.

Four Leopard pitchers have thrown at least 20 innings, led by Makayla Lecky, who has a team-best 8.56 ERA over 41 innings of work.

Lehigh leads the all-time series 113-24 and has won the last 19 games against the Leopards, including a three-game sweep last April at Leadership Park. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Leopards 17-1 over last year's three games, highlighted by a no-hitter by Katelyn Young in the series opener.

Following the weekend series, Lehigh will head to Princeton April 2 for a single game before hosting Bucknell for three league games April 5-6.
