Mountain Hawks Drop League-Opening Doubleheader To Visiting Army

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The inability to pick up clutch hits with runners on base hurt the Lehigh softball team in its Patriot League-opening doubleheader with Army West Point Saturday at Leadership Park.

The Mountain Hawks left 22 runners on base across the two games. Lehigh rallied to tie game one 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, only to fall 4-3 in eight innings. Army broke open game two late to win 9-0.

The losses drop Lehigh to 12-16 on the season, while Army moves to 15-12.

First-year Kelly Fricker led the way for Lehigh Saturday, going 5-for-8 across the two games with two runs scored and the game-tying RBI double in game one.

Game one saw Army take an early lead with single runs in the first and second innings. Lehigh scored its first run in the fourth when Fricker led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice and then scored when junior Abbey Tabaka reached on an error.

Sienna Tepley's two-out RBI single in the sixth re-established a two-run lead for the Black Knights.

Lehigh opened the bottom of the sixth with three straight singles, as senior Maddy Schmeiser singled home Fricker to bring the Mountain Hawks within a run. A sacrifice bunt moved the tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position, but Lehigh was unable to capitalize.

In the seventh, sophomore Peyton Sward reached on a one-out triple to left field and scored the tying run when Fricker slammed a double off the right field fence.

Army went to Amanda Eaglin out of the bullpen who picked up a strikeout, then walked a batter before getting out of the inning with a popup to first base.

Two of the first three Black Knights reached via singles in the eighth inning, with Tepley striking again with the go-ahead sacrifice fly to foul territory in left field to put Army up 4-3.

Eaglin set Lehigh down in order in the bottom of the eighth to close out game one.

Junior Chloe Hess took the loss for Lehigh in game one, allowing four runs on 10 hits over eight innings. Hess walked one and struck out three.
Â
Eaglin, the third of three Army pitchers, earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Fricker had three of Lehigh's seven hits in the opener.

In game two, Army scored two runs in the first inning on a double by Emma Murchison and added single runs in the second and third innings to go up 4-0.

Lehigh loaded the bases with two outs in both the second and third innings, but was unable to push a run across.

Ashton White's RBI single put Army up 5-0 in the sixth and the Black Knights added four runs in the seventh, highlighted by Sam Bocis' three-run triple.

Lehigh registered six hits, including two by both Fricker and first-year Lizzie Kern both had two hits and the Mountain Hawks also drew six walks in the game, but left 13 runners on base.

Senior Maria Urban started in the circle and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over three innings. First-year Madison Finnerty pitched the final four innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

Lehigh and Army wrap up their series with a single game Sunday at noon.
