Mountain Hawks Drop Two At Mark Campbell Invitational

2/8/2025 11:12:00 PM | Softball

IRVINE, Calif. – Day two of the 2025 season saw Lehigh battle California Baptist and No. 5/6 UCLA at the Mark Campbell Invitational, Saturday at Barber Park. The Mountain Hawks fell victim to a big inning in each game and struggled to bring home base runners as Lehigh dropped both games by identical 9-0 scores in five innings.

Lehigh (1-3) was done in by a seven-run third inning and left 11 runners on base against the Lancers (2-2); while the national power Bruins (4-0) scored three runs in the first and six in the fourth and then worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth to top the Mountain Hawks.

First-year Helen Woloshyn and senior Julia Mrochko were both 2-for-3 against California Baptist, as Lehigh totaled seven hits. UCLA's Kaitlyn Terry retired the first 12 Mountain Hawks she faced. The first two batters of the fifth inning both reached on errors, before junior Sydney Parlett registered Lehigh's lone hit against the Bruins with an infield single.

In Lehigh's first game of the day, California Baptist scored an unearned run in the second inning and broke the game open with a seven-run third. The key hits in the inning were a two-run double by Kate Penberthy and a two-run home run by Kalena Burns. In the fourth, Burns hit her second home run of the game, a solo shot, to out CBU up 9-0.

The Mountain Hawks had opportunities, but left two runners on base in the first, second and fifth innings, while leaving the bases loaded in the fourth.

Junior Chloe Hess started in the circle and allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in 2.1 innings of work. Senior Maria Urban threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.

In game two, UCLA scored three runs in the home first on a two-run triple by Jordan Woolery and a Seneca Curo sacrifice fly.

First-year pitcher Madison Finnerty settled in after that, keeping the Bruins off the scoreboard in the second and third innings.

UCLA took control of the game with a six-run fourth inning that featured back-to-back home runs, a three-run shot by Megan Grant and a solo home run by Curo.

Senior Rory Dudley reached on an error to lead off the fifth, becoming Lehigh's first base runner of the game. Sophomore Gracie Smith also reached on an error, with Parlett's infield hit loading the bases with nobody out. Terry worked out of trouble, striking out sophomore Holly Lovett, getting Mrochko to ground into a force play and then retiring senior Lindsey Martin on a pop up to end the game.

Finnerty took the loss allowing nine runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout in 3.2 innings. Sophomore Maddy Clark got the final out of the fourth inning.

Terry struck out nine of the 18 batters she faced for UCLA. The Bruins have yet to allow a run through four games in 2025, outscoring their opponents 34-0.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their season-opening road trip on Sunday when they face UC Riverside at 4 p.m. ET in Los Angeles, as part of UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament.
