Mountain Hawks Fall to UC Riverside in California Finale

2/9/2025 6:40:00 PM | Softball

LOS ANGELES - In the final game of its season opening California trip, the Lehigh softball team came up on the short end of a 7-4 final against UC Riverside Sunday at UCLA's Easton Stadium. Once again, Lehigh was once again done in by one big inning as the Highlanders scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Mountain Hawks twice brought the tying run to the plate over the final three innings, but could not complete the comeback.

First-year Kelly Fricker went 3-for-4 picking up three of Lehigh's nine hits, but the Mountain Hawks fell to 1-4 on the young season.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth inning when junior Sydney Parlett singled home Fricker with two outs to put Lehigh on top.

UC Riverside (3-3) went in front on a grand slam by Haley Saole with one out in the fifth and tacked on three more runs to take a 7-1 lead.

Lehigh battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to get within 7-3. An error after a single by junior Crysta Duenas allowed sophomore Holly Lovett to score and then sophomore Peyton Sward singled home Duenas to bring the Mountain Hawks within four runs. Lehigh loaded the bases with two outs but Brooke Perez got Parlett to fly out to center field to end the frame.

Junior Julia Mrochko led off the sixth inning with a double and scored Lehigh's fourth run on a sacrifice fly by Lovett.

Lehigh put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Perez once again retired Parlett on a pop up to shortstop to end the game.

Junior Chloe Hess started in the circle, and went 6.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. First-year Madison Finnerty entered the game in the fifth inning and was charged with five runs (four earned) on four hits while recording one out.

The Mountain Hawks are off next weekend and will return to action with games against Ball State, Charlotte and UAlbany at the Charlotte Invitational Feb. 21-23 in Charlotte, N.C.
