BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh (4-7) will open Patriot League play Wednesday on New Year's Eve at Army, marking the Mountain Hawks' first game in more than a week. The contest will serve as Lehigh's league opener following a brief break in the schedule for the Holidays.
The Mountain Hawks split their last four games heading into the holiday break, earning victories over Cornell and Brown, while falling to Mount St. Mary's and Towson.
On Dec. 3 against Cornell, Lehigh earned a 66-52 victory over the Big Red. First-year Leia Edwards and senior Lily Fandre each scored 21 points in the win.
Edwards was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the third straight week on Dec. 8, becoming the first Mountain Hawk to earn the honor three consecutive weeks since Kerry Kinek in 2013. Edwards has scored in double figures in seven of the nine games she has played this season and leads Lehigh in scoring (13.7 points per game) and rebounding (7.0 rebounds per game).
Fandre enters league play averaging 13.4 points per game and is coming off a 24-point performance in a Dec. 20 loss to Towson. She has totaled 963 career points at Lehigh and is 37 points shy of becoming the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Army enters Patriot League play with a 9-2 overall record and is a perfect 5-0 at Christl Arena this season. The Black Knights have won five of their last six games. Junior forward Kya Smith leads Army in scoring, averaging just over 15 points per game, and has been a consistent offensive presence throughout the season. Since the holiday break, Army has played one game, earning a 64-56 victory over Howard at home. The win marked another solid performance at Christl Arena, where the Black Knights have yet to suffer a loss this season.
