Lehigh Falls To Monmouth 76-62 In Non-League Finale

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The non-league portion of Lehigh men's basketball's schedule came to a close on Sunday afternoon from OceanFirst Bank Center against the Monmouth Hawks. An efficient shooting performance from Monmouth helped push them past the Mountain Hawks 76-62.
"Unfortunately we didn't take the care of the ball the way in which we needed to, and that led to too many easy opportunities for Monmouth," said Murray H. Goodman '48 head coach Brett Reed. "It increased their points off turnovers and points in the paint because of our inability to take care of the ball."
Lehigh (4-9) and Monmouth (6-7) are familiar foes, having played one another in consecutive seasons since 2017 (with the exception of the shortened 2020 COVID season). The all-time series between the Mountain Hawks and Hawks is now tied 7-7.
Monmouth attacked the paint in the early going, scoring six points in that area to lead 8-5 at the first media timeout. Lehigh found success beyond the arc, using triples from Joshua Ingram and Andrew Urosevic to bring the Mountain Hawks within one at 14-13 with 11:16 remaining.
The Mountain Hawks continued to chip away, eventually taking their first lead of the night at 17-16 on a Nasir Whitlock pull-up jumper. The two teams traded buckets down the stretch, culminating in a Urosevic triple to tie the game at 28-28. Monmouth then concluded the frame on a 9-0 run to take a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
Lehigh opened the second half strongly, scoring five unanswered on a Peter Kramer triple and Hank Alvey layup. The Hawks responded with a 16-6 run to take an 14-point advantage, prompting a Lehigh timeout with 13:27 remaining.
The Mountain Hawks kept their deficit within ten points throughout the second half, but the Hawks seemingly always had a response. Monmouth took their largest lead of the night at 75-57 in the final two minutes of the game before buckets from Whitlock and Alfredo Addesa ultimately set the score at 76-62 at the final whistle.
Lehigh shot 46.3% (25-54) from the field, 35.7% (10-28) from three while only taking four free throws the entire game. Monmouth shot the ball efficiently to the tune of 51.7% (31-60) from the floor, 61.5% (8-13) from distance and 60.0% (6-10) from the free throw line. The Hawks did the bulk of their damage in the paint, outscoring Lehigh 40-24 in that area. In addition, Monmouth forced 20 turnovers and scored 22 points off them.
Ingram led the way for Lehigh, scoring 20 points on 8-14 shooting with seven rebounds and four triples. Whitlock added 18 points on 8-14 shooting with a team-high five assists.
"It was great to see Joshua come out assertive and aggressive," said Reed. "He is such a good player, and the combination of him, Nasir, and Hank give us a trio of guys who can really score at this level."
Alvey scored seven points and hauled in ten rebounds, his third consecutive game grabbing ten or more rebounds.
"As a little bit of an undersized team, Hank's ability to rebound the ball is critical for us," said Reed. "He was active on the glass, even giving us extra possessions with five offensive rebounds."
Monmouth was led by Justin Ray with 17 points while Cornelius Robinson Jr. (15p) and Jason Rivera-Torres (11p) also scored in double-figures.
The Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play on Wednesday, December 31 at 12 p.m. at Stabler Arena against the Army West Point Black Knights.
