Mountain Hawks Head To Washington For First Matchup Of The Season With American

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's basketball is back on Wednesday evening from Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. for their first meeting of the season with the American University Eagles. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in our nation's capital.
Lehigh (6-11, 1-5 PL) owns the all-time advantage over American (10-9, 4-2 PL) 34-28 and has been very successful against the Eagles as of late. The Mountain Hawks have won eight of the past ten matchups against the Eagles, including a 70-68 win in their last meeting at Stabler Arena on January 20, 2024.
If Lehigh wins, they would earn their seventh win of the season and improve to 2-5 in Patriot League play. Brett Reed's all-time record against the Eagles would move to 24-13.
The Mountain Hawks welcomed the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds to Stabler Arena on Saturday for Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day, presented by Rich Mar Florist. The Mountain Hawks led after the first half, but ultimately fell by a score of 76-60. Lehigh shot 47.9% (23-48) from the field and a much improved 43.8% (7-16) from three in the game while Loyola shot 50.0% from both the field (29-58) and three (11-22). The Greyhounds out-rebounded the Mountain Hawks 35-22. Edouard Benoit scored a new career-high 15 points on the afternoon. Sophomore Cam Gillus matched him with 15 points to go along with three assists and two rebounds. Making his first-career start, sophomore Nasir Whitlock reached double-figures for the fourth consecutive game with 10.
The Eagles enter Wednesday's game in third place in the Patriot League with an overall record of 10-9 and league mark of 4-2. American has won each of their last three games, earning wins over Bucknell, Loyola (Md.), and most recently Holy Cross. The Eagles are led offensively by Preseason Player of the Year Matt Rogers who averages 16.2 points per game on 53.6% from the field and 39.7% from three. Senior Elijah Stephens averages 11.1 points and a team-high 3.7 assists per game while graduate student Collin Smalls also averages double-figures at 11.1 points per game.
Following Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks host Lafayette for The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute on Saturday, January 26. The men will tip-off at 7 p.m. after the women face the Leopards at 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be listened to on Fox Sports 94.7 FM and 1230 AM.
