Second Half the Difference in 2-0 Loss to No. 15 Seton Hall

9/24/2024 9:43:00 PM | Men's Soccer

WEST ORANGE, N.J. - Lehigh men's soccer went toe-to-toe with No. 15 Seton Hall in the first half, but a pair of second-half goals by the Pirates would be the difference in the 2-0 loss Tuesday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. With the loss, the Mountain Hawks fell to 2-6-1 while Seton Hall improved to 7-1.

"I thought we played well between the 18 for the majority of the game," said head coach Dean Koski. "Seton Hall is very mature and a very good team. I like the way we played the first half. I felt we made some mistakes executing in the box. We had some good chances early on that we didn't capitalize on."

The first half was a defensive battle as both teams entered halftime scoreless. Seton Hall's Hugo Gebore opened up the scoring in the 53rd minute after he slipped a cross from Jack Kossoudji right behind senior goalkeeper Ryan Gross.

Gross, who made his first start in net since Aug. 26., tallied a game-high of five saves while Soren Jensen made just one save in net for Seton Hall.

"I thought Ryan played well today," Koski said. " He has been a great teammate and today was a good day to give Blake some rest."

The Pirates doubled their lead in the 73rd minute after Rikard Cederberg headed it right on goal and into the net.

Lehigh struggled to generate chances on Tuesday as Seton Hall outshot the Mountain Hawks 14-4. The Pirates also held a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams had eight corner kicks.

Lehigh's best chance of the night came in the eighth minute after Beckett Wenger nailed a shot right on net, but Seton Hall's Jensen was there for the diving save.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday on Alumni Day versus Boston University at 6 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

"Our focus is on Boston University," Koski said. "They're coming to us, so we have to be at our best."
