WEST POINT, N.Y. - After being down 2-1 in the second half, Lehigh men's soccer scored the game's final two goals of the day to come away with the 3-2 win over Army West Point Saturday night at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field. With the win, the Mountain Hawks moved to 2-5-1, while the Black Knights dropped to 1-6-1.
The game came down to video review after Gage Lyons fired a shot off as time expired and the referees reviewed it to see if Lyons was fouled in the box. After review, they determined there was no foul.
"I'm really happy for the guys because they have been doing all the right things since preseason," said head coach Dean Koski. "They have been really committed. When you don't get the results early on, you start to second-guess yourself, but this was a really good win. When results don't come your way early on, it can be difficult to reconcile."
Juniors Sam Davis and Yusef Gueye came up huge for the Mountain Hawks down the stretch. Davis scored his first collegiate goal in the 57th minute to tie the game at two and Yusef Gueye broke the deadlock and scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute.
Not only did Saturday mark a crucial win for Lehigh as it sent them home with three points, it also marked the first time the Mountain Hawks won at Army since 2018.
It didn't take too long for Lehigh to get on the board as Perry Kingson opened up the scoring in the fifth minute on a free kick. Although the Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead early on, the Black Knights netted the equalizer in the seventh minute after Ronald Zhai scored off of a free kick.
Army took its first lead of the night after Jack Kryger connected on a goal in the 53rd minute.
Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski recorded five saves in net and Blair Camargo tallied three saves for the Black Knights.
Army held a 19-16 advantage in shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.Gueye finished with a team-high five shots and Giacomo Zizza recorded four shots of his own.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Tuesday when they head to West Orange, N.J. to face Seton Hall. The game will be broadcast on FloSports.
