Mountain Hawks Drop Two One-Run Games Friday In Boston

BOSTON – Two tight battles between the top two teams in the Patriot League. Unfortunately for the Lehigh softball team host Boston University secured a pair of walk-off wins to sweep Friday's doubleheader at BU Softball Field and secure the league's regular season championship.
BU's Caitlin Coker was the hero in both walk-off wins as she beat a throw home from first base to win the opener 2-1 in 11 innings, then hit a game-winning inside-the-park home run as the Terriers rallied for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Senior Katelyn Young came out on the short end of a pitcher's duel with BU's Allison Boaz and Kacey Ricard in the opener. Lehigh then grabbed a 4-2 lead in the nightcap with the Terriers scoring two in the fifth to tie the game before winning in the home seventh.
Senior Amanda Greaney was 3-for-5 on the day, including a pair of RBI singles in game two.
Lehigh falls to 30-17 overall and 14-3 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks are locked into the No. 2 seed in next week's Patriot League Tournament, which will be held May 9-11 at BU Softball Field.
Boston University improves to 48-4-1 overall and 17-0 in the Patriot League.
Coker staked BU to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of game one as she doubled home Kayla Roncin, who had reached on an error.
Lehigh answered in the top of the sixth when graduate student Josie Charles worked a leadoff walk, stole second and came around to score when Roncin booted Cimino's ground ball into shallow center field.
Boaz matched up with Young through the first six innings before giving way to Ricard. Lehigh put the leadoff batter on in the seventh but could not score and then had first and third with two out in the eighth before Ricard struck out junior Rory Dudley with a pitch on the outside corner.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th. A hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice bunt, a walk and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position for BU with one out. Lauren Nett hit a comebacker to Young, who looked Coker back and threw to first for the out, but Coker took off from third and beat the throw home to score the winning run.
Lehigh actually out-hit Boston University 5-4 with both sides committing one error that led to a run during regulation.
Young threw a career-high 10.2 innings in game one, allowing one earned run on four hits, with four walks and six strikeouts.
Boaz allowed one run in six innings for BU with a walk and five strikeouts, while Ricard threw five shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits with two talks and 10 strikeouts.
Lizzy Avery gave Boston University an early 1-0 lead in game two with a first-inning RBI single, but Lehigh answered with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Greaney singled home junior Rory Dudley to tie the game at 1-1 and then sophomore Sydney Parlett followed with a pinch-hit single scoring junior Julia Mrochko.
BU tied the game in the third on a RBI single by Kayla Roncin, but sophomore Chloe Hess worked out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a pop out and then a fly ball to right that Cimino caught at her shoe tops before throwing to first for a double play.
Greaney struck again in the fourth with a single off the right field fence that scored pinch runner Maddy Clark. Lehigh added another run in the fifth when Cimino led off with a double and then scored on a single by senior Brooke Cannon.
The Terriers tied the game in the fifth on a two-out, two-RBI double down the left field line by Brooke Deppiesse.
With one out in the seventh, Coker hit a fly ball to deep right that Cimino got a glove on to keep in the park, but the ball caromed away from her, allowing Coker to race all the way around with the winning run.
Hess went the first three-plus innings, allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Junior Maria Urban pitched 2.1 innings in relief allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Young retired the first three batters she faced prior to Coker's game-ending home run.
Lehigh finished with eight hits in game two with Greaney and first-year Holly Lovett both recording two.
The Mountain Hawks and Terriers will wrap up their series and the regular season on Saturday with a single game beginning at noon.
