WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh raced to a 5-0 lead and had to survive a late Army West Point push, but the Mountain Hawks held on to claim the rubber match against the Black Knights 5-3 Sunday at the Army Softball Complex.
Â
First-year Holly Lovett drove in three of Lehigh's five runs as the Mountain Hawks enter the final week of the regular season at 29-15 overall and 14-1 in the Patriot League.
Â
Lehigh started strong with a three-run top of the first inning. Lovett drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the game's first run and the junior Julia Mrochko added an RBI single with a second run scoring off an Army error.
Â
Lovett extended Lehigh's lead with a two-run single in the fifth inning.
Â
Army (12-34, 7-8 PL) rallied in the home sixth with back-to-back home runs, a two-run shot from Ashton White and a solo homer by Caitlyn Newburn.
Â
Junior Maria Urban came on in relief of senior Katelyn Young to get the first two outs of the inning and after issuing a walk, retired the tying run Sam Bocis on a comebacker.
Â
Urban set down the Black Knights in order in the seventh to secure Lehigh's fifth straight Patriot League series win.
Â
Lehigh out-hit Army 7-6 with seven different Mountain Hawks recording hits.
Â
Young went the first five-plus innings in the circle allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Urban then retired six of the seven batters she faced.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will host Princeton Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in their Pride Game, presented by Lehigh University's Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. Lehigh will close out the regular season at Boston University, May 4-5 needing two victories to claim the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
