Seven Boats Compete At Knecht Cup For Lehigh On Sunday
4/14/2024 4:11:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
CHERRY HILL, N.J. – After races were canceled due to inclement weather on Saturday morning, Lehigh rowing finally competed at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J. on Sunday morning. The Mountain Hawks competed in seven races between both the women's and men's teams.
The first races of the day for Lehigh were both the women's and men's novice four boats. The women went first, placing third in their heat with a time of 8:53.05, which was good enough for the fourth fastest out of 16 competing boats. The men finished their race in 7:35.27, which was third in their heat and seventh overall out of 16 boats.
The women's first varsity four+ was next, and again the Mountain Hawks finished third in their heat and 11th of 25 boats with a time of 8:16.83. The women's second varsity eight+ followed, finishing their race in 7:12.93 to claim third in their heat and 12th overall out of 22 boats. Then, the men's second varsity eight+ kicked off their race next, finishing fifth in their heat with a time of 6:34.35. They finished in tenth of 11 boats in the race.
"The competition was there, but we came together and gave our best effort," said first-year Adelaide Weir. "We got off the start fast and stayed consistent throughout the race. I can't wait to hold the same energy the rest of the season."
"The 2v had a pretty rough race today. We have yet to find power and swing together during a race rep," said sophomore Henry Vietor. "We know we have the speed in the boat, it's just about executing when it counts. We are looking forward to finding it together in our next race."
The two final races of the day for Lehigh were the women's and men's first varsity eight+ boats. The women raced first, facing the likes of Jacksonville, Ithaca, Delaware, and Drake in their heat. The women finished in fourth with a time of 7:05.28 which was good enough for 20th out of 26 competing boats.
"Today was a great step forward in relatively new lineups," said Hannah Vogel. "We faced pretty tough competition and maintained our focus and plan within our own boat."
Finally, the men's first varsity eight+ finished third in their heat against Temple, Michigan, Marist and Rhode Island RC. The Mountain Hawks finished with a time of 6:03.51, which was the seventh fastest out of 15 total boats.
"We had a solid race rep today," said William Snider. "The conditions in the second half of the race weren't the best. We were able to dig deep and come back strong from a shaky start and finish within a decent position."
The men will be in competition again in two weeks from now at the MARC Championships on Sunday, April 28. The women return to action on Sunday, May 5 for a race against the Bucknell Bison.
