Early Lead Propels Lehigh to 9-7 Victory over No. 17/18 Colgate

4/13/2024 7:17:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

HAMILTON, N.Y  - Lehigh men's lacrosse picked up its first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 17/18 Colgate Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium. The Mountain Hawks came out of the gates storming, scoring the game's first five goals, and they would not look back from there. With the win, the Mountain Hawks moved to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League. Colgate dropped to 7-5 (4-2 PL). Saturday's results created a six-way tie for first place in the Patriot League.

Seniors Quinn Armstrong (4G, 1A)  and Scott Cole (4G) combined for eight of Lehigh's nine goals as they both scored four goals apiece. Armstrong helped Lehigh build the early lead as he scored three goals in the first half.  EJ Vasile had the only other goal for Lehigh. Freddie Amato, Dakota Eierman and Andrew Kelly each finished with a team-high of two assists.

It was Lehigh's defense that helped lead the Mountain Hawks to the win as they held the Raiders scoreless for the first 28 minutes and 30 seconds of the game. Nick Pecora was a big reason why Colgate was held scoreless for so long, as he recorded seven first-half saves. Pecora finished with 10 saves. Colgate's seven goals marked a season-low.

Sean Dow continued his outstanding performance at the stripe, winning 14-of-18 faceoffs while also corralling seven ground balls. Dow came up big down the stretch, winning five of his 14 faceoffs in the fourth quarter. Although Lehigh won the possession battle, Colgate held a 34-25 advantage in shots as the Mountain Hawks committed 23 turnovers while the Raiders finished with 17 turnovers. Lehigh took care of the ball early on, committing just one turnover in the first 15 minutes, which is what helped the Mountain Hawks build an early lead.

Despite holding a five-goal lead, the Raiders would not go away. Patty Eldredge scored the first goal of the day for Colgate with 1:20 remaining in the first half to help cut Lehigh's lead to 5-1 at halftime. Cole was called offsides right before the first half expired, and the Raiders started the second half man-up, and they capitalized on it as Liam Connor found the back of the net.

After a little scoring drought for Lehigh, Cole put Lehigh back up by three goals halfway through the third quarter, but the Raiders went on a 3-0 run to end the quarter, which trimmed Lehigh's lead to one goal heading into the final frame. The Raiders scored two of their three goals in a span of 21 seconds. The Raiders would go on to cut Lehigh's lead to one goal two other times in the final 15 minutes, but Armstrong and Cole had an answer every single time Colgate would score.

Reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week Richard Checo finished with a team-high of two caused turnovers. Checo also picked up six ground balls. Colin Fowler and Raul Ochotorena both recorded a caused turnover as well.

Rory Connor scored a team-high of two goals for the Raiders. Colgate's Matt LaCombe finished with four saves.

Lehigh will look to keep it going when it plays host to Boston University on April 20 at 12 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Saturday's game will air on CBS Sports Network.
