Mountain Hawks Move To 3-0 On California Trip With Wins Over Utah Tech And UC Santa Barbara

3/9/2024 8:36:00 PM | Softball

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Lehigh continued action at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II with two more wins Saturday at Campus Diamond. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with an 8-0, five-inning triumph over Utah Tech, and then defeated the host Gauchos 2-1 to improve to 3-0 in the tournament and extend their winning streak to four overall.

Graduate student Emily Cimino led the way at the plate going 5-for-6 with a home run over the two games, while three Lehigh pitchers combined to allow just one run on four hits over 12 innings.

Lehigh is now 6-9 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks started fast against Utah Tech (6-14) scoring three runs in the top of the first. Graduate student Josie Charles tripled home first-year Grace Smith and then scored on an error. Sophomore Sydney Parlett later singled home junior Rory Dudley to put Lehigh up 3-0 before Utah Tech came to bat.

Cimino added to Lehigh's lead in the third with a solo home run to center field, her first of the season.

Lehigh added four more runs in the fifth on a Dudley two-run double, one of four Utah Tech errors on a double steal attempt, and another RBI single by Parlett.

In the circle, sophomore Chloe Hess was outstanding. She allowed a walk and a single in a scoreless first inning but retired the final 13 Trailblazers to record her first win of the season with a one-hit shutout. Hess struck out three of the 17 batters she faced.

Cimino and Parlett combined for five of Lehigh's nine hits.

The game against UC Santa Barbara (5-14) was much more tightly contested. Lehigh's only scoring came in the third inning on RBI doubles by Cimino and Dudley.

Ainsley Waddell doubled home the only run for the Gauchos in the fourth inning, but otherwise the duo of junior Maria Urban and senior Katelyn Young was in control. Urban allowed a run on three hits over five innings to earn her second victory, while Young retired six of the seven batters she faced to earn a save.

Lehigh had seven hits including two apiece from Charles and Cimino.

The Mountain Hawks will close out the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II on Sunday with games against Utah Tech and UC Santa Barbara, following the same schedule as Saturday. Lehigh will face Utah Tech at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT and then host UC Santa Barbara at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT. The UC Santa Barbara game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
