Lehigh Downs UC Santa Barbara to Complete 4-1 California Trip

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Lehigh softball team split two games Sunday on the final day of the UC Santa Barbara Tournament at Campus Diamond. The Mountain Hawks bounced back from an 8-2 loss to Utah Tech in their first game of the day to defeat UC Santa Barbara 4-2, ending their five-game California trip on a high note.

Lehigh went 4-1 at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament and heads home with a 7-10 overall mark.
Â
Senior Brooke Cannon and junior Rory Dudley both had two hits on the day, while the first career home run by first-year Holly Lovett proved to be the difference against UC Santa Barbara.

Lehigh took a 1-0 lead on UCSB in the fourth when graduate student Emily Cimino scored on a throwing error following a Dudley stolen base.

The Gauchos (6-15) tied the game in the home fifth on Alana Snow's RBI double.
Â
Cannon scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the sixth and Lovett followed later with a two-run home run to right field to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-1 advantage.

UC Santa Barbara pulled a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but senior Katelyn Young got Ainsley Waddell to pop out to third base with the tying runs on base to end the game.

Lehigh finished with eight hits, with Cannon and Dudley both going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Young earned her second win of the weekend, allowing two runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Sunday's first game against Utah Tech saw Lehigh lose a 2-1 lead in a contest that featured several missed opportunities by the Mountain Hawks before the Trailblazers scored five runs in the seventh to build a six-run cushion.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, senior Amanda Greaney delivered a two-out, two-run single to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

Utah Tech (7-15) tied the game in the third on Laura Lockard's RBI double and took a 3-2 lead the following inning when Carly Eldridge grounded into a fielder's choice.

Lehigh left runners on the corners in the fourth and then stranded the bases loaded in the fifth. The Trailblazers added on five in the seventh on a two-run single by Lockard and a three-run inside-the-park home run by Rachel Campbell.

Greaney and graduate student Josie Charles both had two hits as Lehigh finished with seven, compared to Utah Tech's 11.

Senior Ansley Dambach started and went 2.1 innings in the circle allowing two runs on five hits. Sophomore Chloe Hess took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in four innings of relief.

The Mountain Hawks will return to Pennsylvania to close out spring break with six games over four days at the Penn State Softball Invitational, Mar. 14-17 in University Park, Pa. Lehigh will open action against host Penn State on Thursday, Mar. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
