Mountain Hawks Head To West Coast For UC Santa Barbara Tournament II

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh softball starts spring break in California this weekend for five games at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II.Â
Lehigh will face off against Utah Tech for three games, while playing two against host UC Santa Barbara.
The Mountain Hawks open the tournament against the Trailblazers Friday at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT. On Saturday and Sunday Lehigh will face Utah Tech at noon ET/9 a.m. PT followed immediately by games against UC Santa Barbara at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT.Â
Both games against UC Santa Barbara will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Lehigh goes into the weekend at 3-9 overall. The Mountain Hawks last played on Feb. 25, defeating Iowa State 4-2 on the final day of the Rawlings Classic in Virginia. Senior Katelyn Young threw a complete game in the win, allowing two runs on six hits - striking out four while walking three in the contest. Junior Julia Mrochko went 1-for-3 with a big two-RBI single in the win, capping a tournament where she had three hits and four RBIs in two games against the Cyclones.
First-year Peyton Sward leads the Mountain Hawks at the plate with a .448 average, 13 hits and eight runs scored. Classmate Gracie Smith has seven runs scored and 12 hits. Graduate student Josie Charles is hitting .364 with a team-leading six RBIs.Â
Young owns two of Lehigh's three wins on the season and has thrown a team-best 32.1 innings in the circle with 23 strikeouts. Junior Maria Urban has the other win and leads Lehigh with a 3.50 ERA.
Lehigh has never played UC Santa Barbara or Utah Tech but has faced off against Gauchos' head coach Jo Evans, who was the head coach at Texas A&M when Lehigh eliminated the Aggies in the NCAA regional tournament in 2006 and 2009.
Utah Tech is 6-11 on the season and has lost its last four games, dropping contests to Wisconsin, Utah and Utah State over the last week.Â
UC Santa Barbara is 4-13 on the season. The Gauchos went 1-3 at the Capital Classic in Sacramento and Davis, Calif., defeating Santa Clara and falling to BYU, Utah State and Sacramento State.
Following the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II, Lehigh will come home to close out Spring Break with six games at the Penn State Softball Invitational, Mar. 14-17.
