Lehigh Opens California Trip With 7-3 Win Over Utah Tech

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Lehigh opened its spring break trip to California with a 7-3 victory over Utah Tech Friday at UC Santa Barbara's Campus Diamond. Senior Brooke Cannon homered and drove in four runs to lead the way for the Mountain Hawks, who won their second straight to improve to 4-9 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks fell behind 1-0 after half an inning of play but came storming back with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game. Seven of the first eight Lehigh players that came to bat in the first reached via hits.

Cannon delivered Lehigh's first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead. Three batters later, sophomore Sydney Parlett drilled a two-run triple to right center, bringing home two more runs to give Lehigh a three-run advantage. First-year Holly Lovett capped the inning with an RBI single, scoring Parlett.

Utah Tech (6-12) pulled back within two with single runs in the second and third innings, but senior Katelyn Young shut the Trailblazers down over the final four frames.

Cannon capped the scoring with a two-out two run single in the bottom of the sixth.

Lehigh finished with 13 hits on the day, with Cannon, Parlett, graduate student Josie Charles and first-years Gracie Smith and Peyton Sward all registering two-hit games.

Young picked up her third win of the season, allowing three runs on six hits in a complete game effort. She walked three and struck out seven.

Rachel Campbell had two of Utah Tech's six hits.

The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II on Saturday when they face Utah Tech again at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT, followed by a game against host UC Santa Barbara at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT. The UC Santa Barbara game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
