LEWISBURG, Pa. – Six Lehigh wrestlers earned spots in Saturday morning's championship semifinals, while two others secured podium finishes Friday on day one of the EIWA Championships at Bucknell's Sojka Pavilion.
Lehigh's semifinalists include first-year Luke Stanich (125), first-year Ryan Crookham (133), juniors Malyke Hines (141), Max Brignola (157) and Michael Beard (197) and sophomore Nathan Taylor (285).
The Mountain Hawks went 18-6 on Friday with 15 bonus point wins. Lehigh has 80.5 points after day one, good for second place, 11 behind Cornell at 91.5. The Big Red have nine semifinalists. Army West Point and Penn are tied for third at 62.5.
Beard and Taylor were the first two Mountain Hawks to secure automatic qualification for the NCAA Championships.
Of Lehigh's six semifinalists, only Stanich reached the final four with two pins Friday as he pinned Bucknell's Grayson McLellan in the first period and then stuck Drew Heethuis of Princeton in the second period. Stanich will next face Ethan Berginc of Army, the No. 5 seed in the semifinals.
After opening his tournament with a dominant first period technical fall over Sulayman Bah of Columbia, Crookham held off John Hildebrandt of Drexel 4-2 in the quarterfinals to earn his semifinal place. Crookham made a first period takedown stand. He will next face Bucknell's Kurt Phipps Saturday morning.
Earlier this year Hines opened the Sheridan Tournament with 2-1 victories over Brown's Ian Oswalt and Binghamton's Nate Lucier. On Friday, Hines was much more dominant, defeating both wrestlers by major decision to secure his semifinal place. Hines will now face Bucknell's Dylan Chappell in the semifinal round.
While Stanich had two pins and Hines had a pair of majors, Brignola used two technical falls to reach the semifinals at 157. Brignola defeated Devon Capato of American and Tyler Williams of Drexel to set up a rubber match for the season against Penn's Lucas Revano.
Beard pinned Brown's Lear Quinton in the opening round and then picked up his 16th technical fall victory of the season, with a 21-5 win over Logan Deacetis of Bucknell. He is slated to face Princeton's Luke Stout in the semifinals.
Taylor used a 17-1 technical fall over Franklin & Marshall's Harrison Shapiro and then a 12-0 major decision over Princeton's Matt Cover to make the semis. He will next face Cornell's Lewis Fernandes for a spot in the finals.
First-year Kelvin Griffin (149) and junior Jake Logan (165) secured podium finishes with wins in Friday evening's third round of consolations.
Griffin had two falls on the day bringing his season total to 14, but had to overcome a 7-5 loss to Harvard's Jack Crook in the quarterfinals
Logan rebounded from a first-round loss to Kyle Mosher of Columbia with two wins to reach the podium. A late takedown and four-point near fall propelled Logan past Adam Thomson of Penn and then Logan posted a 13-4 major decision over Blaine Bergey of Princeton.
Sophomores Connor Herceg (174) and Jack Wilt (184) were eliminated on Friday. Herceg won a pair of consolation bouts as part of a 2-2 showing, while Wilt was edged 5-4 by Navy's David Key in the opening round before falling to Army's Dalton Harkins 9-2.
