Lehigh Defeats Army 64-51 in Regular Season Finale

3/6/2024 10:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Lehigh women's basketball captured its second straight season sweep after defeating Army West Point 64-51 Wednesday night at Christl Arena in the regular season finale.

"I'm really proud of the way we defended, especially early on," said head coach Addie Micir. "Army's a really good team, and they can score, and they want to play up and down. They have some kids that go off the bounce, and we wouldn't let them go one-on-one."

The Mountain Hawks moved to 17-12 (9-9 PL), and the Black Knights dropped to 12-16 (9-9 PL). Lehigh ended the season tied for fifth-place, alongside Army, Bucknell and Navy, but the Mountain Hawks hold the tie-breakers over all of them. Since Lehigh clinched the fifth seed, the Mountain Hawks will be playing at Loyola Monday in a Patriot League Quarterfinal at 7:10 p.m.

The Mountain Hawks shot 24-of-52 (46.2%) from the field, and the Black Knights shot 20-of-55 (36.4%) from the field. After making just one three-pointer last game, Lehigh shot the ball much better from long range on Wednesday, going 8-of-23 from distance (34.8%).

Junior guard Ella Stemmer scored a game-high of 17 points after going 5-of-8 from the field. Stemmer knocked down three three-pointers to tie Danielle Baldwin '00 for the ninth-most three-pointers in program history (141). Stemmer also corralled five rebounds and two steals. While Stemmer was the lone Mountain Hawk to finish in double figures, nine different players recorded a point on Wednesday.

Junior guard Colleen McQuillen was one point away from finishing in double figures, tallying nine points. Maddie Albrecht chipped in eight points, and Meghan O'Brien and Whitney Lind both added seven points.

Camryn Tade opened the game with a three-pointer, and Remi Sisselman answered back with a three-pointer of her own two minutes later to tie things at three. Kaylee Van Eps put Lehigh up 9-7 with 5:11 left in the opening frame, and the Mountain Hawks would never lose their lead from there. Lehigh held a lead for 35:53 of Wednesday night's contest.

Lehigh led 18-11 after the opening frame, and the Mountain Hawks would only continue to extend their lead. Lehigh's defense stepped up big in the second quarter, limiting Army to just six points. Not only did Lehigh hold a lead for 35 minutes, but after Gracyn Lovette knocked down a three-pointer with 5:03 remaining in the first half, the Mountain Hawks would hold a double digit lead for the remainder of the game. Lehigh led 32-17 at halftime.

The Black Knights went on a 5-0 run in the third quarter to cut the lead to 11 points with 3:04 remaining, but that would be the fewest points Lehigh would lead by for the remainder of the game. Lehigh led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter, but the Black Knights were able to narrow down their deficit to 13 at the end of the game.

Tade scored 12 points to lead the way for Army.

Lehigh held a 36-25 advantage on the glass on Wednesday.

"You have to like that," Micir said. "We focus a lot on that, especially on the defensive end. The battle on the boards is really big with a team like Army. The best part was our defensive rebounds translated into offensive rebounds."

Playing in her first game back since Feb. 14, Lily Fandre corralled five rebounds and scored six points after making two three-pointers.

Monday's quarterfinal will be broadcast on ESPN+ with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM in Easton.
