BALTIMORE - Lehigh women's basketball saw its 2023-24 season come to an end Monday night in Baltimore as the Mountain Hawks fell 58-51 to Loyola in a Patriot League Quarterfinal at Reitz Arena.
Lehigh ends its season with a 17-13 record, and Loyola is now 16-14 with a chance to improve its record on Thursday in the Patriot League semifinals at No. 1 Holy Cross.
While the Mountain Hawks took care of the basketball on Monday, committing just eight turnovers, they struggled to convert shots, going 18-of-54 from the field (33.3%). Two players finished in double figures. Ella Stemmer led the way with 12 points, and Lily Fandre added 11.
The Greyhounds were 21-of-48 from the field (43.8%). Loyola didn't take care of the basketball, turning it over 17 times, but the Greyhounds completely dominated the glass, holding a 41-22 advantage on the boards.
"The difference wasn't the shooting," said head coach Addie Micir. "The difference was the rebound that led to the shooting. They crashed the boards hard, and you have to give them credit for that. They made big plays when they needed to off those boards, and they hit a bunch of threes with some kids that don't always make them, but they made them tonight, and that's what good players do, so you have to give them credit."
The last time these two teams met, Lex Therien exploded for 44 points. While Lehigh limited her to 13 points, she grabbed 23 rebounds, which is a Patriot League Tournament record. Laura Salmeron scored a game-high of 20 points.
"We guarded Therien better than last time, but it wasn't enough," Micir said.
Although Loyola led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, it was Lehigh who led for the majority of the game (20:27). The Greyhounds held a lead for 15:54.
Remi Sisselman knocked down a three-pointer with 5:02 left in the first half to put the Mountain Hawks up 24-13, but the Greyhounds immediately answered with an 11-0 run to tie things at 24 with 47 seconds remaining.
Maddie Albrecht gave Lehigh a slim 26-24 lead heading into halftime after knocking down two free throws with 32 seconds left.
Loyola held a lead for the majority of the third quarter until Stemmer nailed a three-pointer with 1:34 remaining to put Lehigh up 38-37. That would be the last lead of the game for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh tied things at 40 just 13 seconds into the frame, but the Greyhounds went on a 7-0 run from there. The Mountain Hawks were never able to build back a lead, trailing by at least seven points for the final nine minutes.
Albrecht finished with seven points, Sisselman added seven points and Gracyn Lovette, Colleen McQuillen and Meghan O'Brien all tallied five points.
"The first half was great, but you have to put 40 points together in March, and we didn't do it tonight," Micir said. We're going to learn from it. We got a young group coming back, so we're going to say thank you to our seniors, and we're going to learn."
