3/6/2024 1:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The road to the Patriot League championship begins on Thursday for Lehigh men's basketball, as the team will face off against #3 Lafayette in the third installment of the Rivalry this season. The two teams will meet in the Patriot League quarterfinal round for the second consecutive season, except this time the game will be played in Easton.
Lehigh (12-17, 9-9 PL) trails Lafayette (11-20, 10-8 PL) 149-96 in the all-time series, making the Rivalry one of the oldest and most played series in all of college basketball. The Mountain Hawks got the best of the Leopards in the regular season, earning a 94-90 double overtime win at home on February 10 and a 71-63 win at the Kirby Sports Center on February 24. Although Lehigh has won the last two games in the series, the two teams are 5-5 overall in their last ten meetings.
If Lehigh wins, they would advance to face the winner of #2 Boston University vs. #7 Navy in the Patriot League semifinal. The Mountain Hawks would win their third game over the Leopards this season and it would be the fifth time in team history that Lehigh would win a game as the six seed or lower in the Patriot League tournament.
After winning five in a row, Lehigh dropped their final two regular season games to finish as the #6 seed with a record of 9-9 in Patriot League play. Junior Tyler Whitney-Sidney and senior Dominic Parolin were named to All-Patriot League teams, with Whitney-Sidney earning first team honors and Parolin making the third team. Whitney-Sidney, who passed 1,000 career points in the team's last outing against Colgate, also leads Lehigh with 15.1 points per game. Keith Higgins Jr. ranks second on the team at 13.3 points per game.
Lafayette enters the Patriot League tournament as the #3 seed after posting a 10-8 mark in league play. However, they also come into Thursday's contest as losers of their last four games in a row. The Leopards opened league play on a seven-game win streak, but have gone 3-8 in league play since. Lafayette had three student-athletes make the All-Patriot League third team, those being junior Devin Hines, junior Justin Vander Baan and senior Kyle Jenkins. Vander Baan was also named to the league's All-Defensive team and freshman Mark Butler earned a spot on the All-Rookie team.
Thursday's game will be aired on ESPN+ and can be listened to on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM. Tickets for the game can be purchased HERE.
