Win Over Canisius Highlights Friday Split At Penn State Softball Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team split its games Friday in the Penn State Softball Invitational at Beard Field. The Mountain Hawks opened the day by pounding out 14 hits, including eight doubles, in an 8-3 win over Canisius and then saw host Penn State rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Mountain Hawks 4-3.

Junior Julia Mrochko went 5-for-7 at the plate across the three games, and drove in three runs against Canisius. Classmate Rory Dudley totaled four hits and three RBI Friday, including a school record-tying three doubles in the victory over the Golden Griffins.
Â
Friday's split leaves Lehigh at 8-12 on the season.

Canisius (5-8) struck for two runs off of junior Maria Urban in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead before Lehigh scored eight of the next nine runs.
Â
Mrochko doubled off the center field wall in the fourth to score Dudley to bring Lehigh within 2-1. Sydney Costan's RBI double extended Canisius' lead to 3-1 after four innings, but it was all Lehigh after that.

Dudley doubled to left center in the fifth to score graduate students Emily Cimino and Josie Charles to tie the game at 3-3.
Â
A three-run sixth inning gave the Mountain Hawks a 6-3 lead, with Charles singling home the go-ahead runs and Cimino following with a sacrifice fly.

Canisius put the first two batters into scoring position in the bottom of the sixth but senior Katelyn Young came on in relief to set down the next three Golden Griffins to preserve the Lehigh lead.

Mrochko's second RBI double of the game brought home two more runs in the seventh.
Dudley recorded the eighth three-double games since the start of the 1997 season and the first since Jaelynn Chesson registered three doubles at Holy Cross in 2019.

Urban earned her third victory of the season, allowing three runs on nine hits with a strikeout and no walks. Young retired six of the eight batters she faced with four strikeouts to earn the save.

In Lehigh's second game of the day, Penn State (17-6) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Kaitlyn Morrison's RBI double.

Lehigh answered with three runs in the fourth as Dudley singled to score Charles and two batters later sophomore Sydney Parlett singled up the middle to bring home two more Mountain Hawks.

Young went the distance in the circle for Lehigh. She stranded two in the fifth thanks to a pair of strong defensive plays by Mrochko at second base.

Penn State pulled a run back in the sixth on Liana Jones' RBI triple, but Young got a strikeout and a comebacker to keep the tying run at third and keep the Mountain Hawks ahead after six.

Morrison started Penn State's seventh-inning rally with a one out triple and Hailey Brunson brought her home with the tying run with a two-out double. A walk and a wild pitch put runners at second and third and Gaby Garcia singled through the left side to plate Brunson with the winning run.

The Nittany Lions had a 9-8 edge in hits with Mrochko going 3-for-3 to lead Lehigh.

Young allowed four runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings. She walked four and struck out four.

The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the Penn State Softball Invitational on Saturday with games against Binghamton (11 a.m.) and Cornell (1:30 p.m.). Both games will be broadcast on B1G+.
