#6 Lehigh Heads To #1 Colgate For Patriot League Championship Game

3/12/2024 1:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After pulling off an improbable 21-point comeback against #2 Boston U. to win in overtime in the semifinal, #6 Lehigh has advanced to the Patriot League Tournament Championship for the first time since 2017. The Mountain Hawks will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face #1 Colgate for a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament.

Lehigh (14-17) trails in the all-time series against Colgate (24-9) 63-42. The Raiders have enjoyed great success against the Mountain Hawks recently, as Colgate owns a 9-1 record in the last ten meetings and have won six in a row against Lehigh. However, the Mountain Hawks own the all-time advantage in Patriot League Tournament games, leading 6-4.

If Lehigh wins, they would win their first Patriot League Championship since 2012. A win would snap a six-game skid to the Raiders and would be the seventh win in Lehigh history as a #6 seed or lower in the tournament.

Wednesday's game will be Lehigh's sixth appearance in the Patriot League Tournament Championship, with their record sitting at 3-2 in the big game. Their last championship win came in 2012, and the Mountain Hawks earned a 15-seed in the NCAA Tournament, defeating two-seed Duke in the first round. Wednesday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Colgate in the championship game.

Lehigh defeated Boston U. 84-79 in an overtime comeback thriller to advance to the championship. First-year Cam Gillus exploded for a career-high 30 points in the win, scoring 18 of his points in the second half alone. The first-year shot 6-8 from three-point land. Tyler Whitney-Sidney also impressed in the win, scoring 21 points while hitting the go-ahead basket in overtime. He leads the team in scoring at a mark of 15.3 points per game and was a first team All-Patriot League selection. Also averaging double-digits for the Mountain Hawks are Keith Higgins Jr. (12.8) and Dominic Parolin (11.5).

The Raiders enter Wednesday's championship as the number one seed after finishing the Patriot League regular season with a record of 16-2. Colgate defeated #9 Holy Cross in the quarterfinals and #5 Bucknell in a comeback thriller in the semifinals to advance to their sixth straight championship game. The Raiders are seeking their fifth NCAA tournament berth in the last six seasons. Colgate is led by Patriot League Player of the Year Braeden Smith, who averages a team-high 12.5 points per game. Fifth-year forwards Keegan Records and Ryan Moffatt join Smith with double-digit point averages of 11.0 and 10.7 respectively.

Wednesday's game will be aired on CBS Sports Network and can be listened to on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM or Westwood One.
