Mountain Hawks Welcome Leopards For 244th Playing Of The Rivalry
2/9/2024 11:15:00 AM | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute returns to Stabler Arena on Saturday, as Lehigh men's basketball will play host to the Lafayette Leopards.
One of the longest running college basketball rivalries in the country, Lehigh (7-15, 4-7 PL) and Lafayette (10-14, 9-2 PL) first laced up against one another back in 1902. Over 122 years later, the Rivalry is still going strong. Lafayette holds the advantage in the all-time series 149-94 over Lehigh and won the previous matchup between the two by a score of 71-64 in last year's Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinal. The two teams have played each other very close in recent years to the tune of a 5-5 record in their last ten matchups.
If Lehigh wins, they will snap a two-game Lafayette win streak and will pick up their first win over the Leopards since February 4 of last year when the Mountain Hawks won 66-64 in Easton.
Lehigh suffered a loss in their last time out to the Army West Point Black Knights by a score of 68-57 at home. An inefficient night shooting from the field for Lehigh allowed the Black Knights to claim a lead after the first half and extend their margin in the second half. Dominic Parolin led the Mountain Hawks in scoring with 13 points while senior Jalin Sinclair returned to action for the Mountain Hawks on Wednesday after missing the previous five games for Lehigh.
Lafayette has had an interesting route to the top of the Patriot League standings, as the team currently sits in second place at 9-2 behind Colgate. However, the Leopards entered conference play holding a 1-12 record without a D-I win to their name. Lafayette got back on track at the start of league play, opening the Patriot League season on a seven-game win streak. The Leopards are led by senior Eric Sondberg and junior Justin Vander Baan, who lead the team with 9.3 and 9.2 points per game respectively.
Saturday's game will be aired on ESPN+ and can be listened to on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM.
