BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh opened its two-game homestand on Wednesday evening against the Army West Point Black Knights at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks were bested by the Black Knights 68-57 on a night where shooting truly made the difference.
"It was a really tough offensive night for us," said head coach Dr. Brett Reed. "We're really trying to build in these young men a trust in the process and to continue to try to fight every single possession even if the results aren't necessarily giving us the energy boost we would normally like."
Army West Point (7-17, 3-8 PL) has played Lehigh (7-15, 4-7 PL) well in recent years, as the Black Knights now hold a three-game winning streak over the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh has now lost six of their last ten meetings against Army.
Lehigh competed well in the opening minutes of the game, holding multiple 5+ point leads throughout the frame. The Mountain Hawks held a 21-14 advantage with under nine to play in the half, but would not make another field goal the rest of the way. The Black Knights took advantage of Lehigh's offensive woes, concluding the first half on a 13-2 run to take a 27-23 advantage into the locker room.
The shooting struggles continued for Lehigh in the second half, only connecting on 18.2% (2-11) of their three-point shot attempts. On the flip side, Army continued to shoot the ball well to a tune of 57.1% (16-28) from the field and 46.2% (6-13) from three in the half. Their efficiency allowed them to open the second on a 15-6 run through the first five minutes of gameplay. Although the Mountain Hawks did cut the Black Knight lead to ten on multiple occasions, Army maintained the lead the rest of the way on route to their third Patriot League win of the season.
On the night, Lehigh shot 37.3% (19-51) from the floor and 16% (4-25) from distance compared to Army's 45.6% (26-57) and 39.1% (9-23) shooting splits. The Black Knights also found an advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Mountain Hawks 37-30. An area in which Lehigh excelled was the free throw line, where they shot 83.3% (15-18).
Lehigh was led by senior Dominic Parolin, who posted 13 points off the bench in the loss. Tyler Whitney-Sidney added 12 points to extend his streak of scoring 10+ to six games. Bube Momah tallied nine points in 27 minutes while first-year Nasir Whitlock scored eight on a 3-7 clip from the field with three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
"[Nasir] was a positive spark for us, we trusted him with the ball," said Reed. "Not only did he score it a little bit, but there were a lot of times where he ended up seeing open people and just made a simple play."
The Mountain Hawks return to Stabler Arena on Saturday for this season's first installment of the Rivalry against Lafayette College. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in Bethlehem.
