EASTON, Pa. - Lehigh men's soccer junior midfielder and captain Beckett Wenger was the hero Tuesday night as he netted the game-winning goal in the 70th minute for the Mountain Hawks in the 2-1 win over Lafayette at Gummeson Grounds. Not only did Wenger's goal lead Lehigh to victory, but it also helped lead the Mountain Hawks to the Patriot League Tournament, their first one since 2021.
"They played exactly the way that I hoped," said head coach Dean Koski. "We've had a tough spell for no reason that I can pinpoint, but I really liked the way they responded to playing Lafayette in The Rivalry in Easton with the Patriot League Tournament on the line. I was really impressed with them for coming together as a group and staying true to our core values."
Lehigh wil take on Colgate on Saturday in the Patriot League Quarterfinals in Hamilton, N.Y. at 5 p.m. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
With the win, the Mountain Hawks end their regular season at 6-9-3 (4-4-1 PL) while the Leopards end their season with a 8-6-4 record (3-4-2 PL).Â
The first half was a slow one with both teams deadlocked at zero at halftime. Sophomore defender Sam Davis scored the most important goal of his career when he netted the opening goal in the 60th minute on a pass from senior midfielder Perry Kingson.Â
While Wenger and Davis' goals gave Lehigh the 2-0 lead, Lafayette continued to put pressure on Lehigh as Andrew McIntyre netted a goal for the Leopards in the 82nd minute. Lafayette had a couple of opportunities in the closing minutes, but Lehigh stood strong and limited Lafayette down the stretch.Â
Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski tallied four saves in net as did Lafayette's Griffin Huff. Lafayette outshot Lehigh 12-10. First-year Giacomo Zizza finished with a team-high of four shots on Tuesday.Â
