Mountain Hawks Race At The Head Of The Schuylkill
10/26/2024 7:09:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh rowing returned to the water on Saturday, heading south to Philadelphia to race at the Head of the Schuylkill. The Mountain Hawks had eight boats competing across three separate races, which included women's fours, men's eights and women's eights.
The first race of the day for Lehigh was the women's championship fours, which had three Mountain Hawk boats participating from a pool of 76. The first boat to finish for the Mountain Hawks came in 43rd place with a time of 15:41.07 while the second-finishing boat took 61st at 16:25.31. Lehigh's third boat was a scratch in Saturday morning's competition.
Up next was the men's club championship eights, consisting of three Lehigh boats out of 50 participants. Lehigh's top boat took home 16th place with a time of 12:07.41 followed closely behind by the second-finishing boat in 21st place in 12:16.61. The final boat to cross the finish line for Lehigh in the men's eights placed 42nd with a time of 13:29.20.
"Even with tough conditions, we got some strong races in this Saturday," said sophomore Evan McDonnell. "Sadly, fall season is almost at an end, but I'm happy with how this final head race for our seniors went."
"The boys really worked hard today," said first-year Matthew Stugart. "A lot of preparation went into the race, and I am very satisfied with the result, especially considering it was the first time racing for most of the novices."
Finally, two Lehigh boats competed in the women's championship eights to close out the day for the Mountain Hawks. The two Lehigh eights finished side-by-side, taking 15th and 16th place out of 22 boats with times of 13:32.18 and 13:32.89 respectively.
"As big as a regatta as it was, our boat did a great job of keeping our energy internal and competing with consistent energy throughout the race," said sophomore Adelaide Weir. "The solid finish was a product of our energy and work we put in practice. I'm super proud of our boat for fighting in the tough competitive environment."
"My favorite part of the race was towards the end- where the boat was collectively fatigued and tired but everyone was still giving it their all to the finish," said first-year Elizabeth Janes. "It was my first time racing in an eight and being with a group of girls with that much grit and a relentlessness to not give anything less than their best is an amazing thing to be a part of. So grateful for the opportunity and experience."
"I'm so proud of the confidence and excitement my boat had for today's race," said junior coxswain Ava Albano. "We trusted each other and made sure to give it our all for the seniors in our boat."
Next up, Lehigh will host its annual Class Day Regatta at the Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse on Saturday, November 2. The Mountain Hawks will welcome family, friends and alumni back to the Lehigh River for a boat naming ceremony, competition and fun.
