10/19/2024 4:26:00 PM | Football

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Playing its first game in three weeks, the Lehigh football team dropped a 38-23 decision against Yale Saturday at the Yale Bowl. The Mountain Hawks had their second consecutive 200-yard rushing game as a team, but were hurt by four turnovers, while Yale rushed for 258 yards and scored 17 points off of Lehigh turnovers.

The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 3-3 on the season, while Yale improves to 3-2.

Lehigh took the opening kickoff and drove 43 yards in seven plays, aided by a pass interference penalty. Junior Nick Garrido's first field goal of the season, a 36-yarder, gave Lehigh an early 3-0.

Yale took the lead on its second possession with a 12-play, 87-yard drive capped by a 20 yard pass from Grant Jordan to Joey Felton. The Bulldogs added a defensive score on Lehigh's next drove as Da'Quan Gonzalez picked off graduate student Dante Perri and raced 53 yards for a touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 14-3.

The Mountain Hawks answered on the second play of the second quarter as sophomore Luke Yoder broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run, which pulled Lehigh within 14-10.

The Lehigh defense posted back-to-back stops but the offense was not able to capitalize. Jordan scored on a 10-yard keeper to extend Yale's lead to 21-10 with 3:07 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs then capitalized on a second interception as Joshua Tarver picked off first-year Hayden Johnson, which led to a Josh Pitzenberger 1-yard run on 4th-and-goal to give Yale a 28-10 halftime advantage.

Nick Conforti extended Yale's lead to 31-10 with a 40-yard field goal after a Lehigh fumble. Lehigh answered with a 10-play, 67-yard drive, highlighted by a 28-yard pass on fourth down from Perri to sophomore Mason Humphrey. First-year Jaden Green capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown rush as Lehigh trailed 31-17 with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter.

Yale had an immediate answer as four plays after Green's touchdown, Tre Peterson broke through for a 57-yard touchdown run to re-establish a three touchdown lead for the Bulldogs.

Johnson scored on a 6-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Lehigh out-gained Yale 372-265 and had a time of possession advantage of nearly 32 minutes to 28. The Mountain Hawks rushed for 250 yards and gave up 258 rushing yards to the Bulldogs.

Most of Lehigh's passing yardage came in the fourth quarter. Johnson finished 8-of-16 for 74 yards with an interception, while Perri was 6-of-12 for 48 yards and two interceptions.

Yoder led the ground game with 143 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Green added 60 and a touchdown on 10 rushes.

Junior Geoffrey Jamiel caught seven passes for 54 yards while Humphrey added four for 52.

Defensively, junior Jackson Dowd led the way with 10 tackles, while sophomore Aidan Singleton picked up his second interception of the season on Yale's first play from scrimmage.

Jordan completed 15-of-26 for 107 yards and a touchdown for Yale and added 55 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Peterson led the ground game with 98 yards and a score on 12 rushes. Tarver led the defensive effort with eight tackles and two interceptions.

EXTRA POINTS… Yale retained the Yank Townsend Trophy for the third straight time. The trophy honors Charles Frederick Townsend, the only student from Connecticut in Lehigh's class of 1895… Lehigh has now rushed for 452 yards over its last two games… the Mountain Hawks were held without a sack Saturday and now have 13 sacks in three home games and none in three road games… in addition to his 60 rushing yards, Green averaged 32.6 yards on five kickoff returns with a long of 43.
