Robertson's Brace Lifts Lehigh to 3-1 Win over American

10/11/2024 8:58:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to four games Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex after defeating American 3-1. The Mountain Hawks completely dominated the second half after both teams were deadlocked at zero at halftime.

"We've always been challenged with our games against American," said head coach Dean Koski. "They are always a very good team and always very well coached. Whether we are at our field or their field, it's always a battle, so to be able to get three goals against a really good defensive team is huge for us. Winning at home is always nice and important, but our commitment in the second half to wanting to get goals was much better than in the first half."

With the win, Lehigh improved to 5-6-2 (3-1-1 PL) and is now in sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings with 10 points. The Eagles fell to 3-4-5 (2-2-1 PL).

Sophomore forward Tommy Robertson propelled Lehigh to victory as he recorded his first career brace. Robertson netted the opening goal in the 51st minute after he played a perfect strike to the top left corner. Seven minutes later, Robertson would double Lehigh's lead as he scored another goal in the 58th minute.

"Tommy has had an up and down season, but to his credit, he has stayed true to his values and true to being a good teammate," Koski said. "His habits haven't changed and he still works hard, so I'm proud of him for finding two goals."

Yusef Gueye scored Lehigh's third and final goal of the game in the 70th minute on a header from Perry Kingson. Kingson has now recorded eight points in Lehigh's last four games.

Lehigh would be denied the clean sheet on Friday as Sam Hershey scored American's first and only goal of the game in the 82nd minute. The Eagles had a couple of opportunities in the final minutes of the game, but senior goalkeeper Ryan Gross made two crucial saves to propel the Mountain Hawks to victory.

Lehigh held a 11-8 advantage in shots and a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. American edged Lehigh 4-1 in corner kicks. Matthew Tibbets tallied three saves on Friday for the Eagles. Gueye and Robertson both recorded three shots to lead the way for Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks will close up their non-league slate on Tuesday versus Fairfield at 6 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
