Albrecht's Career-High Performance Pushes Lehigh Past Colgate

1/22/2024 8:14:00 PM | Women's Basketball

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Coming off less than 48 hours of rest, it was Lehigh women's basketball who pulled out a gritty 79-61 victory over Colgate Monday afternoon at Cotterell Court.

Monday's game was Lehigh's first nationally televised game since 2021, as CBS Sports Network aired the game, and the Mountain Hawks certainly delivered.

With this win, Lehigh improved to 11-7 (3-4 PL), and Colgate dropped to 11-7 (4-3 PL).

"It's always tough to come up here and get a win," said head coach Addie Micir. "They are feisty, and they get down hill on you. I thought we really executed our game plan well. We knew that we were bigger, but we had to play bigger, and we had to do that without fouling, and I thought we did that well in the first half to build that lead."

Lehigh was incredible on both ends of the floor today. The Mountain Hawks shot 26-of-47 from the field (56.3%) and 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. Despite the Raiders having 15 more shots, Lehigh's defense held them to just 23-of-62 (37.1%)  from the field, while making just one three pointer on 10 attempts.

Maddie Albrecht had a career-high of 27 points after going 10-of-13 from the field. She also recorded six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Ella Stemmer and Lily Fandre also finished in double figures, as Stemmer scored 12 points and Fandre tallied 11 points.

"Maddie makes it look effortless," Micir said. "She's such a great athlete. In a game where they're going to deny the wings and space the court, when you have someone that can get downhill and go finish, it's great."

Despite being two days removed from a game, the Mountain Hawks did not show signs of being tired. Lehigh opened the game scoring four consecutive points, but the Raiders answered Lehigh on their own 4-0 run.

After Meghan O'Brien scored a layup with 7:37 remaining to put Lehigh up 6-4, the Mountain Hawks would not lose their lead for the remainder of the game.

The Mountain Hawks would continue to extend their lead and took an early 22-12 lead after the first quarter after shooting 9-of-13 from the first quarter (69.2%).

Lehigh did not take its foot off the gas in the second quarter. The Mountain Hawks went on an 8-0 run to go up 39-18 with 2:57 remaining.  Remi Sisselman knocked down two free throws with 57 seconds left in the first half to put Lehigh up by 26 points, which would be the largest lead of the game.

Colgate hit one free throw before the end of the first half to cut Lehigh's lead to 45-20 at the first half.

While the Raiders were down by 25, they would not quit, starting the third quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 19.

Colgate, who is second in the league in scoring defense, forced Lehigh to six turnovers and cut Lehigh's lead to 12 points with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter. The Mountain Hawks would end the quarter on a 6-0 run to go back up by 18 points heading into the final frame. Part of why Colgate outscored Lehigh 25-18 in the third quarter was due to going 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

The fourth quarter would be a similar story,as Colgate continued to put pressure on Lehigh with its press. The Raiders once again cut Lehigh's lead to 12 points with 6:51 left in the game, but the Mountain Hawks scored the next seven points to help pull off the victory.

"We had to show some poise down the stretch," Micir said. "They're a team that turns people over a lot with their pressure. We did it for a little bit, but we were able to  keep our composure and build back up our lead. I'm really proud of the way we played. I thought Maddie and Gracyn with their speed and pace were really hard to guard with open space, and they did exactly what we needed them to do."

Lehigh held a 36-29 advantage on the boards. Meghan O'Brien finished with a team-high of nine rebounds, and she also  scored eight points and dished out a team-high of four assists. Jamie Behar, Gracyn Lovette and Remi Sisselman also all finished with five points. Lovette also recorded three assists.

Tiasia McMillan led Colgate with 15 points on Saturday. Madison Schiller (10 points) and Morgan McMahon (10 points) also finished in double figures.

The Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday against Holy Cross at 2 p.m. Saturday's game will also be 3's For a Cure, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
