BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With Lehigh's slate of 11 non-league games in the rearview mirror, the Mountain Hawks set their sights on the Patriot League regular season. Lehigh's first league matchup will feature the Mountain Hawks traveling to American University in a battle of the second and third ranked teams in the Patriot League preseason poll.
Lehigh (3-8) and American (6-7) have taken to the hardwood against one another 60 times dating back to the 1960-61 season. Lehigh leads the all-time series 33-27 and currently rides a four-game winning streak over the Eagles. The two teams met 12 times prior to American's entrance into the Patriot League in the 2001-02 season. Last season, Lehigh picked up victories by scores of 78-62 (1/14/23) and 62-59 (2/18/23).
If Lehigh defeats American, they would extend their current win streak to two and win streak against the Eagles to five games. In addition, Lehigh would earn its fourth overall win and first Patriot League win of the season.
Lehigh enters Patriot League play off the heels of a win on the road at Marist on December 30. The 65-58 win marked the first road victory of the season for the Mountain Hawks. Sophomore Bube Momah led the charge, scoring a career-high 19 points to go along with a 9-11 mark from the free throw line. Keith Higgins Jr. tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds in the win in what was the first double-double of his career. Higgins leads the Patriot League in scoring at 16.5 points per game. In addition, the Mountain Hawks lead the league in overall scoring with 74.0 points per game.
American enters Patriot League play sitting atop the league standings with a record of 6-7. The Eagles picked up a narrow 87-85 victory over the UMBC Retrievers in their final non-league contest on December 29. American is led by senior Matt Rogers, a Preseason All-Patriot League selection. Rogers averages 15.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, which ranks third and fourth in the Patriot League respectively. Junior Elijah Stephens is second on the team in scoring with a mark of 11.7 points per game. He is tied for first in the league with 5.2 assists per game and is top 50 in the nation in that category. The Eagles were picked to finish in third place in the league behind Colgate and Lehigh.
