LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lehigh women's basketball pulled out a hard-fought 69-63 win against Bucknell Wednesday night at Sojka Pavilion. The Mountain Hawks also captured their first Patriot League win of the season and moved to 9-5 overall (1-2 PL), while the Bison dropped to 3-11 (0-4 PL).
"They run their stuff very well," said head coach Addie Micir. "For two teams who don't foul a whole lot, there were a lot of fouls called in the game. Both teams really battled and that's what you have to expect with league play."
Lehigh and Bucknell were both hungry as they were searching for their first league win of the season, but the Mountain Hawks made some critical free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
After Bucknell was down by as many as 16 heading into the fourth quarter, the Bison were able to cut the deficit down to three with 12 seconds remaining. Lily Fandre got sent to the free throw line where she made one to put Lehigh up 67-63. Bucknell went down and turned the ball over and immediately fouled Fandre with six seconds left where she then made both free throws to put Lehigh up 69-63. The Bison were out of timeouts and could not do anything to come back.
"Lily was huge with that," Micir said. "It was pretty uncharacteristic with us at the free throw line leading up to it. But that kid has ice in her veins for being young. I'm really proud of her and her effort."
Lehigh was 25-of-36 from the charity stripe and Bucknell was 27-of-32 from the free throw line.
Despite the slim margin of victory, Lehigh controlled the pace for the majority of the game after being down 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Mountain Hawks defense played outstanding in the second quarter and limited Bucknell to just seven points in the first quarter to take a 29-23 lead at halftime.
Colleen McQuillen made a layup plus a foul with 3:36 remaining in the second quarter to put Lehigh up 21-20 and the Mountain Hawks held the lead for the rest of the game.
It was Lehigh's big third quarter that helped secure the Patriot League victory for the Mountain Hawks.
Despite Emma Theodorsson opening out the frame with two free throws, Lehigh went on a 11-4 run in the first four minutes of the second half. Lehigh continued to build the lead and went up by 16 at the end of the third quarter, which was its biggest lead of the game. Theodorsson had a game-high of 16 points.
The Mountain Hawks shot 50% from the floor in the third quarter and made three three-pointers, which was a quarter-high. Lehigh ended the game 20-of-53 from the field (37.7%). Bucknell was 17-of-53 (32.1%).
Four Lehigh players finished in double figures for just the second time this season. Lily Fandre has a game-high of 15 points, Remi Sisselman had 13 points, McQuillen tallied 11 and Ella Stemmer finished with 10 points.
After only turning it over 11 times last game, Lehigh turned it over seven on Wednesday, which is a season-low.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their road game swing with a matchup at Holy Cross on Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
