BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh volleyball rolls on this weekend as the Mountain Hawks are set to compete in back-to-back matches on the road. The first match will be against the Loyola Greyhounds on Friday while Lehigh is scheduled to face American in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
Lehigh (9-6, 1-3 PL) competed twice last weekend, once at home and once on the road to begin a three-match road stint. The Mountain Hawks opened their weekend in Grace Hall, hosting the Bucknell Bison. Lehigh earned two set victories, but ultimately fell 3-2 in the contest. Two days removed from their loss to Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks traveled east to Easton on Sunday to take on rival Lafayette. Although junior Makena Smith recorded her 2,000th career assist, the Leopards got the best of Lehigh 3-1 in the match.
Makena Smith has recorded a team-high 344 assists, junior Megan Schulte leads the team with 206 kills, junior Emily Stewart has a team-best 59.0 blocks and junior Kyleigh Brown's 212 digs lead Lehigh. Brown sits only one dig away from reaching 1,000 career digs, which would make her Lehigh's only active player to acheive that mark.
Loyola (5-8, 0-3 PL) traveled north last weekend for away matches against Army West Point and Colgate. The Greyhounds dropped both contests, falling 3-0 to the Black Knights on Friday and 3-0 to the Raiders on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks are 18-3 against the Greyhounds in their last 21 meetings dating back to 2008. Lauren Link leads Loyola in kills with 126, Bryanne Soares' 294 assists are a team-high, Rose McDermott leads the team with 150 digs, and Caitlin Churney has a team-high 34.0 blocks.
American (8-6, 1-1 PL) split their Patriot League-opening weekend 1-1, defeating Holy Cross 3-1 on Friday and losing to Army West Point 3-1 on Saturday. The Eagles then traveled to Coppin State for a non-league matchup on Wednesday, picking up a 3-0 win in the process. Zeynep Uzen leads American in kills with 219, Esma Sipahi's 543 assists are a team-high, Bridget Javitch leads the Eagles with 181 digs, and Carlie Fikse has registered a team-best 48.0 blocks.
