BALTIMORE – Lehigh volleyball began a two-day road stand on Friday night, taking on the Loyola Greyhounds to begin their trip. The Mountain Hawks fell three sets to one to the Greyhounds in Baltimore.
Lehigh (9-7, 1-4 PL) and Loyola (6-8, 1-3 PL), who split the season series a year ago, began the match by trading points with one another. The score was knotted at 9-9 before the Greyhounds began embarking on a solid run, outscoring the Mountain Hawks 8-2 to go up 17-11. Loyola rode this newfound momentum to a 25-17 opening set victory, culminating with an ace from Rose McDermott for the Greyhounds. The second set provided much of the same, as Loyola again prevailed 25-17.
Down 2-0 in sets and their backs against the wall, Lehigh battled back in the third. The Mountain Hawks jumped ahead to a 12-8 lead, registering kills and taking advantage of attacking errors. Loyola managed to tie the set at 16 apiece, but Lehigh took back control and the won set after going on a 9-3 run to close out the third.
Although the Mountain Hawks forced a fourth set, the Greyhounds got back to what was working well for them in the first two sets. Two separate 4-0 runs in the frame from Loyola helped them gain and extend a lead, resulting in a 25-18 fourth set victory and 3-1 decision for the Greyhounds.
Junior Megan Schulte's 13 kills and 11 digs led the Mountain Hawks, junior Makena Smith added 26 assists to her season total, and junior Emily Stewart recorded a team-best nine blocks on the night. Junior Kyleigh Brown reached an impressive milestone on the night, recording her 1,000th career assist during the third set.
Lehigh will head even further south to Washington, D.C. to take on American on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Bender Arena.
