WASHINGTON – Lehigh volleyball concluded its three-match away stand on Saturday afternoon against the American Eagles in D.C. Despite putting up a strong fight in each set, the Eagles ultimately came away with the match victory in straight sets.
Lehigh (9-8, 1-5 PL) found themselves trailing early in the first set as American (10-6, 3-1 PL) opened the frame on a 10-4 run. The Mountain Hawks responded well to their early adversity, uncorking an 8-2 run to tie the match at 12 apiece. The Eagles answered with a 7-2 run of their own and looked to be in control with a 19-14 lead. Although Lehigh fought its way back to set the score at 24-23, American's Holly Hopkins struck one past the Lehigh defense to give the Eagles the first set win.
Set two, although won by American, was again a competitive bout. The Mountain Hawks crawled out of a five-point deficit midway through the frame and ended up tying the set multiple times down the stretch. Despite finding themselves in striking distance with the match knotted at 22-22, American took advantage of attacking errors and recorded an ace to claim the final three points and set number two.
After winning the first two sets, American opened the third on fire, conducting multiple big runs to lead 18-8. However, Lehigh showed no quit and proceeded to respond with a wildly impressive 10-0 run to tie the match at 18. The Mountain Hawks and Eagles again traded blows in the closing stages of the set, culminating with the two sides being tied 23-23. American went on to win the following two points to claim the 3-0 Patriot League victory.
Junior Megan Schulte led Lehigh with 13 kills, marking her 13th match with ten or more kills this season. Junior Makena Smith led the team in assists, dropping an impressive 31 in three sets. Junior Kyleigh Brown's 15 digs were a team-high and the Mountain Hawks recorded a .221 hitting percentage on the day.
"This was a tough road trip. We had lots of chances to win and didn't take advantage," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "We just need to keep battling and pushing to be better each day."
The Mountain Hawks return to Grace Hall on Friday, October 6 to take on Navy. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Leeman-Turner Arena.
"Certainly looking forward to being back at Grace Hall," said Keckler. "Another week to prepare and be ready to compete."
