Lehigh Defeats NJIT and Delaware State Saturday, Improves to 6-0

DOVER, Del. – Lehigh won both of its matches in the Delaware State Invitational Saturday, defeating NJIT, 3-0, before taking down host Delaware State, 3-1, to win the invitational and improve to 6-0 on the season. The 6-0 start marks the first time the Mountain Hawks have opened a season with six straight wins since 2018.

Ufuoma Omene was named MVP of the Delaware State Invitational after recording 29 kills while hitting .448 across three matches.

The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of NJIT, winning 25-21, 25-10 and 25-20. Lehigh hit .329 as a team, recording 35 kills and 10 service aces. Alysia Fingall led Lehigh with nine kills, while Olivia Lasee, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added seven. Omene and Mary Massias recorded five and four kills, respectively, while Grace Slovensky paced the Mountain Hawks with 12 assists.

"I thought we played well and had a full team effort. Felt like our defensive game was on point," said Lehigh head coach Shawn McLaughlin.

Set 1 Lehigh (25-21)
Lehigh opened the day with a 25-21 victory over NJIT in the first set. The Mountain Hawks recorded 14 kills and hit .182.

Set 2 Lehigh (25-10)
The Mountain Hawks dominated the second set, hitting .524 with 11 kills and no errors while holding NJIT to a -.150 hitting percentage.

Set 3 Lehigh (25-20)
Lehigh closed out the sweep with a 25-20 third-set victory. The Mountain Hawks recorded 10 kills and hit .360.

Lehigh closed the invitational with a 3-1 victory over host Delaware State, winning 22-25, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-23 to go 3-0 and win the invitational. The Mountain Hawks recorded 40 kills. Omene led Lehigh with 12 kills, while Massias added nine and Natalie Luscomb recorded a season-high eight kills. Abby Felkai and Slovensky each finished with 13 assists, while Sophia Bond, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Mountain Hawks with 14 digs and Massias added 13.

"Tonight wasn't our best offensive performance, but we fought very hard defensively and found a way to win," said coach McLaughlin.

Set 1 Delaware State (25-22)
Lehigh dropped the opening set against Delaware State, 25-22. The Mountain Hawks recorded 10 kills and hit .118, while Delaware State recorded 12 kills.

Set 2 Lehigh (25-19)
Lehigh bounced back with a 25-19 victory in the second set. The Mountain Hawks recorded nine kills and added three service aces.

Set 3 Lehigh (25-17)
Lehigh took control with a 25-17 victory in the third set. The Mountain Hawks recorded nine kills and hit .138.

Set 4 Lehigh (25-23)
Lehigh closed out the invitational with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set. The Mountain Hawks recorded 12 kills and hit .205, while Delaware State recorded 14 kills.

The Mountain Hawks will be back in action next week when they compete in the West Virginia Invitational. Lehigh will take on Toledo on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. before facing West Virginia on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
