Lehigh To Visit Dartmouth Saturday In First Meeting Since 1999
9/19/2023 2:23:00 PM | Football
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh heads to New England for the second time in three weeks as the Mountain Hawks will face Dartmouth Saturday at Memorial Field in the first meeting between the programs since 1999. The Mountain Hawks are also kicking off a three-game road swing after playing two of their first three games at Goodman Stadium. Lehigh is looking to bounce back from a 23-20 loss to Cornell last weekend. The Mountain Hawks were unable to overcome a slow start, spotting Cornell the first 17 points of the game before scoring a touchdown right before halftime. Lehigh limited the Big Red to a pair of second half field goals, but was unable to complete the comeback. Dartmouth will play its home opener after the Big Green opened their season with a 24-7 loss to in-state rival and 11th-ranked New Hampshire.
Â
Lehigh prepares for its second consecutive Ivy League opponent following up a visit from Cornell with a trip to Dartmouth. With Saturday's game marking the eighth meeting in series history, Dartmouth is Lehigh's least-often faced Ivy League opponent. When Saturday's game is official, Dartmouth will become the seventh of the eight Ivy members Lehigh will have faced this century. The only other Ivy member Lehigh has not faced this century is Brown, with the last meeting between those two schools coming back in 1993.
Â
Wide receiver Geoffrey Jamiel was Lehigh's top receiver in 2022 on the way to becoming just the third Lehigh football player to win the Patriot League's Rookie of the Year award. Jamiel hauled in 53 passes for 649 yards and scored a touchdown on a 39-yard screen pass at Holy Cross in early November. The Massachusetts native had at least three receptions in all 11 games last season, with a high of nine receptions against Bucknell, and closed the year with a season-best 91 receiving yards at Lafayette. A Preseason All-Patriot League honoree, Jamiel has picked up where he left off, with a team-leading 15 catches through two games, including six at Villanova. He scored his first touchdown of the season late in the game against Cornell.
Â
While Lehigh has struggled running the ball through three games, first-year Luke Yoder provided a boost in his first career action against Cornell. Yoder rushed seven times for 37 yards against the Big Red, an average of 5.3 yards per carry. He broke off a 17-yard run and scored Lehigh's first rushing touchdown of the season on a two-yard run right before halftime.
Â
One of Lehigh's strengths over the last two seasons has been its ability to get to opposing quarterbacks. The Mountain Hawks tallied 25 sacks in 2021 to rank second in the Patriot League and once again ranked second in the league last season with 23 sacks. Lehigh registered a sack in nine of 11 games in 2022, with a high of five against Princeton. The Mountain Hawks return 74 percent (17-of-23) of their sack output from last season. Linebacker Mike DeNucci led the way with 8.5, while seniors Sam Sheridan (2.0) and Trevor Harris (1.5) both registered more than one sack last season. Lehigh has six sacks from six different players through three games, none bigger than the two from DeNucci and Harris late in the win over Merrimack.
Â
Dartmouth opened its season with a 24-7 loss at No. 11 New Hampshire and will open its home schedule against Lehigh. The Big Green were picked sixth in the Ivy League after going 3-7 overall in 2022 and 2-5 against Ivy foes. Fifth-year Nick Howard returns as Dartmouth's quarterback, while safety Quinten Arello, offensive linemen Nicholas Schwitzgebel and tight end Jace Henry are returning All-Ivy performers. Running back Q Jones scored Dartmouth's lone touchdown at UNH with a four-yard rush. Receiver Paxton Scott caught 10 passes for 153 yards as Dartmouth out-gained UNH 314-274.
Â
Lehigh and Dartmouth are meeting for just the eighth time, with the Big Green serving as Lehigh's least-played Ivy League opponent. Saturday's game will mark the first meeting between the Mountain Hawks and Big Green since 1999, a 30-14 Lehigh win in Hanover, N.H. Lehigh leads the series 5-2 and this will be the third consecutive meeting at Dartmouth.
Â
Saturday's game kicks off just after 1:30 p.m. from Memorial Field in Durham, N.H. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM in Easton and LVFoxSports.com beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Â
Lehigh continues its three-game road trip with one final test before Patriot League play begins, as the Mountain Hawks will travel to West Long Branch, N.J. to face Monmouth, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will look to snap a four-game Monmouth winning streak in the series. After the Monmouth game, Lehigh will open Patriot League play at Fordham on Oct. 7 before returning home to host Georgetown on Oct. 14.
