Third Quarter Miscues Hurt Lehigh In 34-17 Setback At Dartmouth

Â
Dartmouth (1-1) was playing its home opener with a heavy heart following the death of coach Buddy Teevens earlier in the week. The Big Green honored Teevens with a pregame moment of silence and then rallied to pick up their first win of the season.
Â
Lehigh dropped its second straight to fall to 1-3 on the season. The Mountain Hawks were out-gained 349-167 on the afternoon and had a 21:42-38:18 disparity in time of possession.
Â
"We played a good first half, but in the second half we were nowhere to be found," head coach Kevin Cahill said. "We have some growing up to do.
Â
"I told the team this and I'm not afraid to say it. We need to compete at a higher level than what we're competing at right now."
Â
The game started with Dartmouth marching on a long drive deep into Lehigh territory before the Mountain Hawks made a stand and a big play to take the early lead. On a quarterback keeper, Dartmouth's Nick Howard was stood up by fifth-year Dean Colton and then sophomore Nick Peltekian ripped the ball out. Junior Logan Jones pounced on the loose ball and raced 95 yards for a touchdown to give the Mountain Hawks a 7-0 lead after sophomore Nick Garrido's extra point.

Howard tied the game at 7-7 following a one-yard rush as Dartmouth held the ball for the first 11:30 of the contest before Lehigh's offense saw the field.
Â
Owen Zalc put the Big Green ahead with a 35-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Lehigh answered with its most complete drive of the game as the Mountain Hawks traveled 70 yards in 13 plays. The Mountain Hawks had to settle for a 26-yard Garrido field goal, which tied the game at 10-10 with 6:59 to play in the half.
Â
Cadwallader's go-ahead touchdown pass to Scott came with 35 seconds left in the half and gave the Big Green a 17-10 halftime lead.
Â
Senior Donovan Lassiter's second interception of the season gave Lehigh some third-quarter momentum but Lehigh lost the ball on a fumble a few plays later and Howard's second short touchdown run of the game put the Big Green up 24-10. The Mountain Hawks were done in by a blocked punt on their next possession with Q Jones scoring on a 10-yard rush to extend the Big Green lead to 21 late in the third quarter.
Â
Lehigh picked up a late touchdown as senior Jack DiPietro scored on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter after senior Devari Robinson recovered a muffed punt at the Dartmouth five-yard line.
Â
Sophomore Brayten Silbor finished 11-of-18 for 88 yards passing before giving way to senior Dante Perri, who completed 8-of-12 for 27 yards and an interception.
Â
Lehigh's top receiving target was sophomore Geoffrey Jamiel, who hauled in seven passes for 48 yards. Senior Connor Kennedy added three catches for 17 yards.
Â
The Mountain Hawks mustered just 52 rushing yards with first-year Luke Yoder gaining 19 on seven carries and Silbor adding 14.
Â
Peltekian led Lehigh's defensive effort with 10 tackles, while senior Mike DeNucci had nine and Jones and sophomore Brycen Edwards recorded eight.
Â
Dartmouth rushed for 219 yards, with 99 coming from Jones and 73 from Howard. Cadwallader and Howard combined to complete 21-of-26 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Â
"Dartmouth played the way Dartmouth plays," Cahill said. "They controlled the ball on offense they make you drive the field on defense. That's the recipe for why Dartmouth has won so many games here. That's exactly what they did today."
Â
The Mountain Hawks are back on the road next Saturday when they visit Monmouth with game time set for 1 p.m. from Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J. The game will be broadcast on FloFootball, SNY and NBC Sports Philadelphia+ with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM and LVFoxSports.com beginning at noon.
